Research Computational Facilitator Jobs

We are seeking to fill the position of Research Computational Facilitator in the Research Services department within the Information Technology Services (ITS) organization, (the central IT provider across campus). In your role, you will work as part of a supportive and innovative team to provide research computational support and instruction to researchers at the University of Iowa. You will have the opportunity to work with researchers 1:1 and in small groups to understand and support their use of services hosted by Research Services and other campus-wide services aimed at researchers. The percentage of work is expected to be approximately 50% consultative activities and 50% service support.

Key Duties And Responsibilities (not All-inclusive)

• Consultation activities include meeting with individual researchers or small groups to determine their technology needs. Developing and presenting workshops; providing hands-on training to faculty and students, as well as tools and technologies broadly of interest and utility to the UI research community.

Support activities will include providing guidance on software installation, configuration, and the use of the Argon HPC environment as well as other services provided by UI Research Services.

Development of materials and presentations on the use of HPC, Linux, and other technologies targeted at enabling and accelerating research at the UI.

Attending fairs, informational events, and other events that engage the research and UI community.

Education: A Bachelor’s degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and related experience may also serve to meet these minimum requirements.

Required Qualifications

• Curiosity and motivation to learn and explore new technologies across a broad range of disciplines;
• Demonstrated experience working effectively in a diverse environment.
• Experience effectively communicating with audiences whose technical backgrounds vary widely;
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects with competing priorities and deadlines, and an eagerness to take ownership of challenging assignments;
• Must have excellent analytical and communication skills, a strong customer service orientation;
• Strong organizational skills;
• One year working with high-performance computing systems and scientific software including experience facilitating use of national resources such as XSEDE/ACCESS;
• Working knowledge of scripting and/or application development. Possible languages may include but are not limited to; Python, Bash/Shell, or other common languages found in research applications;
• Experience (typically one or more years) working in an Informatics and/or Research Computing environment;

Desirable Qualifications

• Proven experience contributing to grant proposal development;
• Exposure to HPC architectures and experience developing workflows to leverage various HPC technologies, including, Graphics Accelerators and MPI.
• Experience using version control tools such as Git;
• Experience working in a research lab;
• Exposure to installing software on Linux-based systems from source;
• Experience with automation of electronic scientific workflows;
• Experience working with regulatory regimes such as FISMA, HIPAA, and ITAR;
• Experience providing instruction on the use of technology;
