Job Description

HP P3D Labs- Research Associate (Postdoc) – Formulation Chemist

HP’s Personalization and 3D (P3D) Labs is an advanced R&D research organization located in Palo Alto, CA. HP P3D Labs is to deliver breakthrough technologies and technology advancements that provide a competitive advantage for HP by investing in fundamental science and technology in areas of interest to HP.

Advanced Polymer and Process Physics Lab of HP’s Personalization and 3D (P3D) Labs in Palo Alto, California is seeking an outstanding postdoctoral formulation chemist to join its elite R&D team working on HP’s Multi Jet Fusion 3D printing technology. The person should demonstrate domain expertise in chemistry, polymer science, nanomaterials processing, and dispersion technology. Primary research topic involves developing and optimizing formulations for advanced 3D printing applications. He or she should also be well-versed in various chemical processing and materials analytical techniques. Prior knowledge in chemical/polymer synthesis, encapsulation, and formulation is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in researching and developing voxel-scale control of material properties during 3D printing.
  • Developing and optimizing inks for creating modified multi-material properties during 3D printing
  • Develop and carry out portions of protocols and processes for collecting, recording, and analyzing data; communicate results and conclusions to team members for review and feedback.
  • Work independently to create portions of research plans, investigative procedures, and effectively execute research for assigned investigations.
  • Contribute as a team member with other research scientists and engineers carrying out the investigation, design, development, and execution of scientific research projects to generate new products, technologies, and intellectual property.

Education and Experience

  • PhD degree in Organic Chemistry, Colloid Chemistry, Polymer / Materials Science, or related disciplines.
  • Minimum 4-6 years’ experience, including graduate or postgraduate research and/or industry experience.

Knowledge and Skills

Required:

  • Comfortable working across development and application laboratories, learning new techniques and handling multi projects.
  • Demonstrate professional expertise in colloid science, including polymer and nanomaterial dispersions chemical/polymer synthesis and characterization, nanomaterials, composites, and materials processing.
  • Strong analytical skills as applied towards solving complex physical science challenges.
  • Good understanding of a wide range of chemical/polymer applications, materials testing and evaluation methods, and lab scale characterization techniques
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, team player and ability to effectively communicate research plans, proposals, and results.
  • Experience with dispersions, coatings, and/or interface science

Preferred:

  • Extensive experience with nanomaterials, composites, and materials processing
  • Experience with formulation and characterization of dispersed sub-micron particle systems, nano-scale particles interactions, surface functionalization and modification, and/or pigment chemistry
  • Understanding of electronic and mechanical properties of materials
  • Experience with a variety of analytical methods like DLS, TGA, DSC, Rheometry, etc.
  • Understanding of a wide range of polymer and nanomaterials applications, materials testing and evaluation methods
