Job Summary
Research Associate will perform technical methods and conduct independent research as well as supporting a team. Assist with activities of multiple projects including many tasks for the overall program including inventory, IACUC, data analysis for reports and publications, purchasing, permit reports and editing. The individual will take educational training to help overall program compliance with IACUC, technology export control, and permits. Research will involve remote camera placement and maintenance, review and organization of photos, supervision of other photo workers, box trapping and cat sedation, and attachment of GPS collars. This position will also engage in citizen science project for camera surveys. Research will occur on refuges and ranches in South Texas. Position will assist current masters and doctoral students and staff conducting research on ocelots and bobcats as well as other project activities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Collects samples and measurement data from experiments. Implements and maintains data collection and summarization of field trials.
Collects and compiles data. Computes quantitates and extends projections.
Assembles and operates technical equipment.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Assists senior staff members in conducting major field experiments and consults in developing procedures.
Additional Responsibilities
Conducts and assist with carnivore (ocelot, bobcat, raccoon, skunks, and coyote) captures and sedations
Assist with non-invasive surveys (e.g. scat and remote camera trap)
Establishment of new remote camera stations
Assists with GIS and other remote sensing efforts
Assists with writing and editing reports, articles, scientific posters, and oral presentations VHF and GPS telemetry and analysis
Data entry and maintenance of pre-existing database
Assist with other aspects of project activities

Minimum Requirements
Education -Bachelor's degree in relevant field
Experience - Two years of related professional experience.
Ability to - Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others, work independently and as a part of a research team.
Physical requirements - Ability to lift moderately heavy objects (50lb).

This position may supervise other employees and volunteers.
Preferred Requirements
B.S. in ecology, biology, environmental science, conservation or wildlife management preferred
Work beyond normal business hours and/or work on weekends
Able to live in close quarters with members of a research team, ability to drive all-terrain and 4 WD vehicles. Able to live at different field sites near a study area including ranches and refuges.
Demonstrate ability to work under adverse field conditions (e.g., hot and humid weather, dense thorny woodlands, biting insects and ticks, and venomous snakes).
Willing to learn, conduct or assist with carnivore (preferred) and all wildlife capture, sedation and handling, including skunks and rattlesnakes.
Experience conducting non-invasive surveys (e.g., camera traps, scat, hair).
Experience conducting radio telemetry (and analysis) with GPS and/or VHF collars.
Experience conducting vegetation surveys.
Experience with data entry and maintenance of a pre-existing and new databases.
Ability to hike moderate distances in over flat terrain.
Strong work ethic and good communication skills.
