What we want
The Health Science Center (HSC) is looking for a Research Assistant to serve as a member of the Center for Translational Cancer Research team. We desire an individual who subscribes to and supports our commitment as stated above. This person must be professional, enjoy working in a high-volume environment and be able to apply strong organizational skills while being flexible in their daily routine. What you need to know
Salary: Compensation will be commensurate to selected hire’s experience.
Additional Information: Travel to in-state or out-of-state locations (durations up to 14 days for each trip) within the Continental US as required for training. Occasional weekend and after-hours work required. This position requires excellent oral and written communication skills as demonstrated through oral meeting presentations and written publications, attention to detail and ability to independently plan and execute both short- and long-term collaborative projects, and work as part of a research team. It is expected that detailed written and electronic records will be kept at all times in media accessible to the directors and that all samples are adequately annotated that others can comprehend.

Required Education and Experience:
  • Laboratory experience beyond course laboratories (e.g. full-time summer research or independent research during the semester)
  • Appropriate bachelor’s degree (e.g. Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or similar discipline)
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Comfort with molecular biology techniques like culturing of bacteria, molecular cloning, PCR and familiarity with basic principles of Mendelian genetics, making of simple solutions, buffers, media etc. for research applications
Preferred Experience:
  • Experience in the research context (not laboratory class) with culturing of bacteria, molecular cloning, and PCR. Familiarity with advanced cloning techniques like Gibson, Gateway, SapTrap, Golden Gate, etc., C. elegans biology.
  • Application of CRISPR genome editing
Responsibilities:
  • Experiments - Conducts experiments and technical procedures; investigates research questions. Performs studies by handling C. elegans, genotyping, performing CRISPR and generating transgenics, light microscopy. Also performs lab support duties, e.g. making stock solutions and media.
  • Data Analysis - Prepares data for analysis and prepares samples. Obtain original research results. Organize and maintain equipment used in the lab. Order supplies, organize lab and maintain safety and operational standards.
  • General Operation - Uses computer for controlling equipment and compiling data; makes and records observations and measurements.
  • Writing and Research - Assists in writing and/or edits for publication of scientific materials requiring academic knowledge; researches and catalogs reference material requiring understanding of subject matter theory.
  • Meetings - Participate in weekly lab meetings within the center and other departments. Participate in joint projects involving faculty, junior lab personnel, and graduate students. Performs other duties as assigned.
