Job Summary:
As a Registered Nurse Oncology Nurse, you will play a crucial role in providing specialized care to patients diagnosed with cancer. You will collaborate with the medical team to develop and implement individualized care plans, administer treatments, monitor patients' progress, and provide emotional support to both patients and their families. This challenging and rewarding profession requires compassion, strong critical thinking skills, and a deep understanding of oncology nursing practices.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Provide emotional support, counseling, and guidance to patients and their families, promoting coping mechanisms and increasing their understanding of the disease
- Educate patients and their families about their diagnosis, treatment options, and strategies for managing symptoms and side effects
- Administer chemotherapy, radiation treatments, and other medications accurately and safely, following established protocols, guidelines, and dosage calculations
- Stay current with the latest advancements in oncology nursing, attending conferences, workshops, and continuing education courses to enhance knowledge and skills
- Keep meticulous records of patients' medical history, treatments, and progress, and ensure accurate and timely documentation
- Develop and implement personalized care plans for patients undergoing cancer treatments, ensuring adherence to clinical protocols and best practices
- Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients' medical history and current condition to identify specific needs related to their cancer diagnosis
- Monitor patients closely during treatments and evaluate their response and side effects, adjusting the care plan if necessary
- Collaborate closely with the interdisciplinary team, including physicians, pharmacists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals, to coordinate and optimize patient care
Qualifications and Skills:
- Strong communication and interpersonal abilities to effectively collaborate with patients, families, and healthcare professionals
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in oncology nursing, preferably in an inpatient setting
- Compassionate and empathetic demeanor to provide emotional support and guidance to patients
- Solid understanding of cancer treatments, protocols, and procedures
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice
- Ability to work in a fast-paced and emotionally demanding environment
- Certification in oncology nursing (OCN) strongly preferred
- Familiarity with electronic medical record systems and nursing software
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred, but not required
- Exceptional critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Proficient in administering chemotherapy and radiation therapy
- Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and time management skills
