THE POSITION


The City of Ventura's Parks and Recreation Department is hiring!


We have an immediate vacancy for the position of Recreation Coordinator with the Parks and Recreation Department. This is an exciting time to join the City of Ventura and start a rewarding career with the Parks and Recreation Team!


The Recreation Coordinator is responsible for organizing, implementing, and coordinating recreation and community programs for the City of Ventura's Parks and Recreation Department. This position schedules, trains, and supervises the work of temporary support staff at various City facilities. In addition, the Recreation Coordinator provides administrative support to their assigned area.


Important: The resulting eligibility list will be used to fill other vacancies should they occur while the eligibility list is active. Qualifying candidates may be considered for future Recreation Coordinator vacancies in the assignments listed below. What You'll Do


The current Recreation Coordinator vacancy will be assigned to the Recreation Division's Sports Section and may support the development, organization, and implementation of sports and recreation programs, activities, clinics, and camps including adult sports leagues, fitness classes, tournaments, tennis/pickleball lessons, and events. Additionally, will help coordinate and support the City's sports field allocation process; recruit, train, schedule, and supervise support staff and volunteers; and manage independent contract instructor-led programs.

This person is highly organized and can manage multiple projects at a time. The ideal candidate is skilled at working with constituents and employees from diverse backgrounds. Depending on assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:


  • When assigned to Public and Community Art: Coordinates, catalogues, and maintains the City's municipal and outdoor public art collections including murals, sculptures, and utility boxes; organizes and implements community arts programs, activities, and classes such as the school-based Children's Celebration of the Arts program and Art Tales all-ages writing contest; recruits, trains, schedules, and supervises support staff and volunteers.
  • When assigned to the Barranca Vista Center: Coordinates and oversees Barranca Vista Center operations; develops, organizes, and implements classes, camps, and activities; coordinates facility rentals; recruits, trains, schedules, and supervises support staff and volunteers; manages independent contract instructor-led programs; collaborates with community stakeholders and program partners including the Ventura Unified School District.
  • When assigned to Senior and Community Services: Coordinates and oversees Ventura Avenue Adult Center operations; organizes and implements grant-funded senior nutrition programs; develops, organizes, and implements classes, activities, events, and services for seniors; manages the city's community gardens; coordinates facility rentals; recruits, trains, schedules, and supervises support staff and volunteers; manages independent contract instructor-led programs; collaborates with program partners including the Ventura Area Agency on Aging.
  • When assigned to Afterschool & Camp Programs: Develops, organizes, and implements seasonal camps and youth afterschool programs at local school sites; recruits, trains, schedules, and supervises support staff and volunteers; manages independent contract instructor-led programs; collaborates with community stakeholders and program partners including the Ventura Unified School District.
  • When assigned to Sports & Recreation: Develops, organizes, and implements sports and recreation programs, activities, clinics, and camps including adult sports leagues, fitness classes, tournaments, tennis lessons, sailing camps, aquatics programs, and events; coordinates and oversees the city's Community Sailing Center; helps coordinate and support the City's sports field allocation process; recruits, trains, schedules, and supervises support staff and volunteers; manages independent contract instructor-led programs.
  • When assigned to Historic Sites & Programs: Coordinates and oversees the city's historic sites including the Olivas and Ortega Adobes; develops, organizes, and implements historic and cultural classes, programs, tours, and events such as the school-based Interpretive Outreach Program; coordinates facility rentals; recruits, trains, schedules, and supervises support staff and volunteers; collaborates with program partners including the Museum of Ventura County and Ventura Unified School District.
  • When assigned to Special Events: Coordinates and maintains the City's special event, film, and block party permit process; communicates policies, procedures, and permit requirements; organizes and facilitates the annual July 4th Parade and Street Fair including the application process, event vendors, and marketing; recruits, trains, schedules, and supervises support staff and volunteers; collaborates with community stakeholders including the Ventura Visitors and Convention Bureau.

THE SCHEDULE


  • Week of October 2nd - Department Selection Interviews are tentatively scheduled for this date. Qualifying candidates will be notified by email if they are invited to the panel interview process.
  • Week of September 26th - Oral Panel Interview are tentatively scheduled for this date. Qualifying candidates will be notified by email if they are invited to the panel interview process.
  • October 5th - Candidates will be notified of the outcome of the interview by this date.
  • September 14, 2023, at 5:30 p.m. - Application Deadline. Applications must be submitted by this date to be considered for the position.
  • September 21st - Candidates will be notified by email of their status by this date.

The City offers a total compensation package that includes both a generous salary and other benefits!


  • SALARY: $30.3919 - $36.9415 Hourly DOQ

Position Qualifications


WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO QUALIFY


A combination of education, training and experience equivalent to completion of some college course work in a field related to public administration, recreation, cultural arts, or social services, and two years of progressively responsible experience implementing services in the social services, senior services, cultural arts, or recreation field; OR in lieu of college coursework, a total of three years of experience as described above. Depending upon assignment, the ability to speak Spanish, in addition to English, is desirable.


License


  • Depending on assignment, possession of a valid California Class C driver's license may be required.
  • If duties include driving either a mini-bus or van, according to the Department of Transportation, drug testing is required.
  • If duties include driving either a mini-bus or van, a California Class B driver's license, with passenger endorsement, auto transmission and air brake restrictions, must be obtained within six months of employment.
