Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

We have an opening for a Staff Scientist supporting the Radiological Security portfolio, an element of LLNL’s Global Material Security Program funded by the National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) Office of Radiological Security (ORS). You will collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team that works on enhancing US and global security by preventing high-activity radioactive materials from being used in acts of terrorism. Responsibilities include: providing subject matter expertise across a range of applied physics topics, authoring original technical content to include presentations, white papers, and funding proposals, and leading technical exchanges with international collaborators. This position is in the Safeguards, Nonproliferation, and Response Group within the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division (NACS) of the Physical and Life Sciences Directorate (PLS).

In this role, you will

  • Work with ORS partner organizations and countries to implement mechanisms and approaches to reduce the global reliance on high-activity radioactive sources by promoting the development and adoption of non-radioisotopic alternative technologies where technically, operationally, and economically feasible.
  • Develop high-quality technical content relevant to all aspects of US DOE/NNSA programs on global material security, including training, educational materials, and guidance documents for use by ORS subject matter experts and partner organizations, white papers and proposals for funding, and ORS mission strategies
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Lead projects supporting ORS through engagements with government, law enforcement, and businesses across the globe to protect radioactive sources used for medical, research, and commercial purposes and reduce the global reliance on high-activity radioactive sources through the promotion of viable non-radioisotopic alternative technologies.
  • Participate in the ORS training working group to develop new training courses, review and improve existing materials, and function as an instructor when appropriate.
  • Provide technical briefings to US DOE science and engineering staff, country stakeholders, and NNSA sponsors with varying levels of expertise and background.
  • Develop, organize, plan, and participate in and/or lead technical exchanges, workshops, and training courses of relevance to the ORS mission with foreign partners virtually/remotely and in-person settings
  • Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams within LLNL, across the US DOE Complex, and other USG agencies.

Qualifications

  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally (up to 25% effort) and to work off-/non-routine hours and outside of the office environment, including missions involving training sessions and when on foreign engagements
  • Ability to coordinate and lead large meetings involving stakeholders across multiple US DOE laboratories, federal/state/local agencies, and international organizations
  • Master's degree in Nuclear Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated organizational and interpersonal skills to work with multiple scientific and technical teams involving members from various disciplines and performing effectively under conflicting priorities and rigorous project deadlines.
  • Ability to develop novel research ideas and author funding proposals to support them
  • Advanced problem-solving, analytical, technical, and organizational skills
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Advanced communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively explain and present complex concepts to any level of management or technical background

Qualifications We Desire

  • Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or related field
  • In-depth knowledge of radiation detection and measurement and associated equipment
  • Demonstrated technical expertise across a range of applications, including nuclear physics, x-ray and radioactive source-based irradiators, linear accelerators, nuclear medicine diagnostic and therapy instrumentation, and applications of radioisotopes in commercial industrial and medical settings.
  • Knowledge of or experience on NNSA’s programs in nuclear and radiological safety, security, and safeguards.
