Job Description

The department of Radiation Oncology has an opening for a part-time Nurse Practitioner at our Columbia location. In collaboration with physician colleagues, responsible for diagnosing and treating patients. Provides continuity of patient care by facilitating and coordinating communication between the health care team, patient and patient’s family. Coordinates care to ensure quality, effective care and patient safety. Serves as link integrating relevant research and best practices.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • In clinical collaboration with the attending physician, provides day to day organizational and clinical direction and leadership of the healthcare provider team.
  • Performs comprehensive history and physical assessment for patients admitted/scheduled to service/practice setting
  • In collaboration with physician providers, establishes medical diagnosis based on history, assessment, and diagnostic findings.
  • In collaboration with physician providers, designs, orders, and documents appropriate treatment plans/plans of care including prescriptions of medications based on a comprehensive review of HPI and diagnostic results.
  • Initiates protocols/clinical pathways, evaluates the plan of care ensuring timely intervention.
  • Communicates plan of care with the patients and family members. Provides patient and family instruction related to the plan of care, disease process, new treatment plans, and medication regimens
  • Counsels and educates patients and family members in disease process, health maintenance and health promotion activities. Provides primary, secondary, and tertiary preventive care service

Specialty Care functions

  • Anticipates dynamic individualized treatment plans and uses critical thinking skills to proactively manage expected toxicities over the course of radiation therapy to prevent breaks in physician prescribed treatment plans.
  • Arranges appropriate simulation and educates patients in steps involved with planning dynamic individualized treatment plans.
  • Demonstrates active participation and interaction with staff in medical oncology and surgical oncology multidisciplinary tumor conferences.
  • Follows the patient throughout the continuum of radiation treatment, across multiple departments and institutions, and is a key contact for all radiation therapy related questions for patients/families on treatment and in –queue, as well as team members.
  • Focuses particular attention on cancer prevention and education optimized during routine clinical visits and conducts regular surveillance for survivors to help prevent/ assess for recurrent
  • Arranges appropriate plan of care and follow-up based on outcomes of diagnostic lab and physical assessment findings unique to oncologic patient populations.
  • Recognizes and differentiates oncologic emergencies associated with specific diseases and conditions.
  • Considers the unique needs of cancer patients and directs resources to address the side effects of various modalities of radiation therapy (i.e. brachytherapy , IMRT/IGRT) and multiple chemotherapy regimens.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • DEA and CDS eligible
  • Demonstrated ability to promote professionalism through involvement in professional organizations, teaching, research, publishing, and/or certification in area of specialty
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the lifespan and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs
  • A minimum of one year experience as a Registered Nurse is required
  • Maintains updated mandatory training
  • Updates immunizations as recommended per practice area
  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills are required to interact with patient families, departmental units, medical and nursing staff on all essential matters
  • ACL as required by needs of the department
  • Master of Science degree with completion of a Nurse Practitioner Program. Registered and currently recorded with the Maryland Board of Examiners of Nurses and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Maryland. Eligible for Advanced Oncology certification. (Copy of written agreement with physician signed by the physician and Nurse Practitioner and written approval by the Joint Committee for Nurse Practitioners pursuant to COMAR 10.27.07.06A).
  • CPR required

In the Fall of 2021, FPI will require all employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Exemptions for medical or religious reasons will be processed through Human Resources.
