Job Description
The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics department of Radiology is seeking a Operational Improvement Specialist to facilitate and lead all assigned continuous quality and operational improvement initiatives. Provide operational support to direct multiple strategic, mission-critical projects using process improvement initiatives, data collection and analysis, standard status reporting, audit structures and consultation services to improve operational efficiency in the department.
Characteristic Duties And Responsibilities
  • Assist with the tracking, reporting and championing follow up work for all PSNs in the department.
  • Utilized systematic data-driven methods to identify reporting and control requirements and reflect them in all project plans.
  • Implement and maintain LEAN tools throughout the department, including Kanban, 5S, push/pull, and continuous improvement.
  • Develop and maintain a positive, collaborative relationship with project stakeholder.
  • Develop audit structures for quality and operational processes within the department.
  • Plan for allocation of project resources in line with unit goals, strategic and business objectives.
  • Utilize Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to ensure improvement activities and projects are successfully moving forward.
  • Maintain communication with physicians, staff and other units/departments on a regular basis to promote effective and efficient operations within the department.
  • Assist with creating graphs, PI projects, charters and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Employ appropriate techniques for maintaining team enthusiasm, energy and focus.
  • Verify and confirm funding and budget assignments and allocations for all assigned initiatives.
  • Create value stream mapping (VSM) based on current workloads. Utilize Visio to process VSM workflows.
  • Provide training to management on quality tools and strategies developed for the department. Train key stakeholders on Lean principles and techniques, such as A3's, Root Case Analysis and PDSA.
  • Plan, estimate, organize and manage multiple projects of various sizes within the department.
  • Identify risks and vulnerabilities to creates contingency plans.
  • Assist with measuring project progress, forecasting completion dates and final cost, and analyzing project variances across multiple projects.
  • Create Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to improve efficiencies, eliminate waste and improve patient safety.
  • Collect, analyze and report out financial and productivity data. Utilize data to assist in making quality and process changes.
  • Ensure standards of care, regulatory compliance, QA and safety regulations are followed. Engage staff in meeting plan goals.
  • Coordinate and lead planning sessions to ensure project progress. Adapt work schedule as necessary to ensure all deadlines are met.
  • Contribute to and assist with activities relating to strategic planning and implementation.
  • Utilize data to advise in budget development and discrepancies, resource allocations and cost containment strategies.
  • Facilitate and manage project planning, estimating, and scheduling of projects.

Required Qualifications:
  • 3-5 years' experience in performance improvement initiatives.
  • Proficient with computer software applications and ability to manipulate data and format tables, retrieve data via queries, and create presentations.
  • Experience in managing multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • A Bachelor's degree in an appropriate discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and work independently.
