GENERAL SUMMARY
The Public Relations & Communications Manager assists in the zoo’s storytelling process by pitching news stories to the media, supporting internal communications, among other tactics. The Public Relations & Communications Manager will partake in internal and external communications projects, media opportunities, and reputation management for Lincoln Park Zoo, reporting to the Director of Public Relations & Communications. The candidate will gain a solid grounding in the public relations and content skills needed to understand and navigate the media world for a non-for-profit, mission-based organization.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Collaborate with the zoo’s Creative and Marketing teams to contribute to overall Marketing & Communications plans and goals
- Interact with both internal and external audiences via telephone, e-mail and in person
- Coordinate interviews between zoo experts and media outlets
- Support Copy & Content Writer with content for biweekly e-newsletter, ZooMail, and monthly board email
- Identify strong stories and produce and/or curate related content
- Work in tandem with Director of Public Relations & Communications on strategic storytelling and reputation building for the zoo
- Assist with crisis communications and safeguard the reputation of the zoo
- Create and curate media lists, and distribute news releases using Cision software
- Upload press content to lpzoo.org
- Aid in day-to-day operational needs of communications department including but not limited to additional content writing, department support, and office administration tasks
- Proactively seek out stories across the zoo and its experts for pitching to media
- Facilitate on-site media opportunities including interviews, press conferences, events, and the like
- Contribute stories to the zoo’s owned channels (blog, magazine, annual report) as needed
- Work closely with the Social Media Manager, Copy & Content Editor and Video Editor/Creator to align content across channels owned and earned channels
- Provide daily content for the zoo’s internal blog, Today at the Zoo
- Be a trusted resource to zoo staff and spokespeople offering interview support and feedback
- Conduct background research on various zoo and aquarium industry news, local news, national trends, etc. to proactively identify storytelling and media opportunities
- Write press releases, pitches, press kits, and calendar listings
- Oversee media reports and impression tracking
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Ability to meet deadlines and to be organized
- Bilingual in English/Spanish not required but preferred
- Proven experience through previous internship/job in the fields of public relations, communications, and/or journalism
- Highly-motivated self-starter capable of independent work as well as team projects
- Familiar with Microsoft Office Suite, knowledge of media monitoring services and/or web editing software a plus
- Superior writing skills; must demonstrate experience with media writing
- Familiarity with AP writing style
REQUIREMENTS
- 3-5 years of experience working in public relations or a related field
- Writing experience required. Media relations or PR agency experience preferred.
- Available to work at the Lincoln Park Zoo offices 2-5 days a week. Available to arrive at the zoo quickly for emergencies that may arise.
- To be considered, candidates must include a cover letter and two to three writing samples (either attached to the cover letter or link to a portfolio) with their resume/CV and application to be considered.
- Available to work full-time Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with occasional nights and weekends based on zoo needs.
- Position must be able to work flexible hours including some early mornings, nights, and weekends as necessary, and walk/stand for extended periods of time
- Consistently demonstrate professional work ethic, attire, and demeanor
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to sit for long periods of time while viewing a computer monitor
- Ability to stand and walk on zoo grounds for several hours at a time
- Ability to work in open office environment
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Must provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination
