Title: Public Health Detailer – Environmental Health
$24.29 - $40.75 / Posted Thru: 4-23-23

Location: Remote – Occasional In-Person at Lansing, MI Office Required
Statewide Travel Required – Must Live in Michigan

Purpose: The principal function of this position is to align and strengthen collaboration between healthcare providers and the Division of Environmental Health. The position will conduct outreach and training of primary care providers to integrate environmental health principles and exposure screening, treatment, and prevention initiatives in clinical practice. The goal is to improve clinicians’ knowledge around emerging and existing contaminants, inform decision-making around pertinent exposure interventions and to continually enhance the quality-of-care delivery to those at risk.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Always represent the best interests of MDHHS and MPHI.
  • Establish collaborative relationships and leverage connections with physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants, as well as their opinion leaders, to assist in improving clinicians’ knowledge around environmental health principles, exposure screening, treatment, and prevention initiatives.
  • Conduct interviews to evaluate clinicians’ baseline knowledge and educational needs.
  • Define clear environmental health educational and behavioral goals and objectives adapted to healthcare practices and the patient population.
  • Research, identify, and recruit key provider practices in targeted geographical areas and coordinate brief presentations to coincide with clinic schedules.
  • In collaboration with health educator, prepare pertinent and engaging educational material and tools for providers including relevant epidemiologic updates in partnership with Division of Environmental Health subject matter experts.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Remain current on existing and emerging environmental health issues and subsequent clinical practice recommendations.
  • In collaboration with the DEH Consulting Physicians and other DEH technical experts, gather and disseminate materials that support essential environmental health clinical practice messaging and provide positive reinforcement for screening, treatment, and prevention.

Qualifications/Requirements:


Education: Possession of a master's degree in nursing, public health, or a related health field.

Experience: Two years of professional, post-master's experience as a consultant in a field of public health or clinical health experience, with at least one year of clinical detailing experience. Highly desirable: educational background in or experience working in environmental health.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and familiarity with email/internet browser software.
  • Complete work in timely manner and handle multiple tasks at one time with minimal or no supervision.
  • Self-motivated, able to conceptualize changing health care systems, and effectively and efficiently implement new program direction.
  • Able to work well in team situations.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with diplomacy under challenging circumstances.
  • Commitment to health equity and serving the underserved populations in Michigan.
  • Excellent oral and written communications.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Job may require moderate physical effort including transporting materials and equipment of <25# and involves using a CRT or VDT screen 30% to 50% of the time and responding to phone inquiries. Standard office environment. Requires valid vehicle operator’s license where needed to perform duties of the position. Frequent deadlines. This position is based in Michigan and will require significant travel throughout the state.
