Looking for a graduate student or recent graduate in the health or social sciences (psychology, public health, social work) with an interest in working on research related to substance use, primarily opioid or cannabis use. There is one part-time (~20 - 30 hours per week) position available with the possibility of more hours beginning in May.
The position is primarily data management and analysis using the R programming language. Applicants must have significant experience (2+ years) coding in R and analyzing complex public health or epidemiological data. Applicants who meet these criteria will be asked to provide a recent R code sample through messaging.
The project involves providing the state (Illinois) with information on the effects of legalizing cannabis. We are in the process of collecting multiple, public-health related data sets for analysis of things such as changes in cannabis use among youth and other populations such as those on Medicaid/Medicare, hospitalizations and emergency department visits, poison control center contacts, etc. There will be over 10 data sources that will need to be set up in a system and a series of programs written to produce statistics that we will update quarterly on our web site (creating a dashboard running Tableau) and which we will use to produce an annual report to an advisory committee established by the Governor's office. The required skill set is: experience managing and analyzing large, complex data sets in R; experience putting together statistical reports for review and presentation to a lay audience; and creating data sets for use in web site dashboards.
Experience working with Medicaid/Medicare and substance use-related data such as the National Survey on Drug Use and Health is a huge plus. If you have this experience, please highlight it in your application.
The work can be done remotely but you must be available during working business hours and able to respond quickly to emails and participate in weekly team meetings (using Zoom). Preference will be given to someone living in Illinois and particularly the Chicago area but other considerations such as skill set and experience will be weighed based on the individual applicant.
Please include in your application a current resume or CV highlighting your research experience. Your application will be viewed favorably if you have public health or social science research and R coding experience.
