About the Opportunity
Northeastern University’s College of Professional Studies invites applicants for a part-time teaching position to teach and serve as a dissertation in practice chair in our innovative online Doctor of Education program within the Graduate School of Education. The Graduate School of Education programs are located at the intersection of theory, research and practice and foster the development of scholars in practice. The program aims to support professionals from a variety of fields and contexts to develop the skills and intellectual acumen to effect change and innovation, to question systemic norms, and to anticipate and shape a more equitable, globally connected society.
Responsibilities:
Faculty members teach in an online environment with a diverse student body. We believe that graduate work in education positions students to leverage change and innovation toward a more just and equitable society. As such, our faculty embrace a scholar-practitioner model that uses Action Research as its signature pedagogy. The Doctor of Education attracts students who are passionate about exploring ways they can make the world a better place and improve practices for learners in a variety of professional fields including P-12, Higher Education and Workplace Learning.
The position is a part-time Dissertation in Practice Chair/Faculty member to teach courses within the action research curriculum and guide doctoral candidates through dissertation in practice requirements (as Chair or committee member). Teaching responsibilities includes facilitating the designed curriculum, maintaining a learner focus, actively participating in a course structure that facilitates learning, utilizing formative and summative assessment, being attentive to the student experience, bringing individual knowledge and expertise into the classroom, providing specific and relevant feedback, and inspiring students to achieve course and program outcomes relevant to the core discipline.
This position works closely with other faculty teaching in the program in addition to faculty leads, Director of Dissertations and reports to the Director of the EdD program. Essential Functions: The role of Part-Time Dissertation in Practice Chairs may include teaching courses within the Action Research Core Curriculum as assigned, acting as a Dissertation Chair and/or acting as a Dissertation Committee Member.
Faculty must demonstrate a commitment to Northeastern's vision, mission, and goals and those of the Graduate School of Education. Faculty are expected to participate in initial and ongoing training. Participate in faculty and staff meetings. Faculty must maintain contact with students via phone, video conferencing, and email through their courses. Faculty must perform all teaching, mentoring, and chairing in accordance with Northeastern University’s policies and procedures in addition to federal policies governing education and research.
The position is based online, and most GSE faculty are remote. There may be some travel to Boston, MA, Seattle, WA or Charlotte, NC for hybrid courses or convenings. Courses are taught fully online and a thoughtful comfort level with online instruction (Canvas is employed) is critical.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum two (2) years of direct teaching experience at the Master and/or Doctoral level.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, with a proven ability to provide timely, accurate information on a variety of academically oriented subjects to both internal and external constituents.
  • Experienced in guiding and supervising research
  • Doctorate degree in a relevant field from an accredited university
  • Excellent skills in teaching online, a passion for teaching, and a commitment to learning
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Skill in doctoral-level verbal and written communication
  • Three to five (3-5) years of professional and/or research experience in the content area.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret peer-reviewed, quantitative and qualitative empirical studies, professional journals, and technical procedures.
  • Experienced online instructor
  • Experienced with action research
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to mentor and coach students on their research and writing
