Duration: Fulltime
We are looking for a highly experienced Project Manager to join our team, specifically someone with Mechanical Engineering experience. As a Project Manager, you will help lead our team on the completion of multiple optical instrument development projects, including both refractive and reflective instruments, for commercial and defense applications. Your expertise in project management, engineering, and team leadership will be crucial in driving innovation, ensuring technical excellence, and delivering high-quality products.

Who does this position will report to?: Head of Mechanical Engineering.
What projects will the consultant be involved with?:
- Ongoing custom design of electronic enclosures for some pretty unique applications.
Responsibilities:
Engineering
Understand and effectively communicate relevant technical details with a team of engineers and SMEs of various experience levels and expertise
o Provide technical insight and strategic direction to the engineering team to quickly realize cost-effective and timely designs and solutions
o Understand and contribute to the design and development of complex optical instruments
o Perform hands-on activities and support as needed, including mechanical assembly or integration with in-house thermal vacuum testing equipment
Documentation
Work closely with technical contributors to ensure that all technical, financial, and programmatic requirements have been met
o Understand, track, and communicate relevant technical requirements
o Generate and maintain Gantt charts, and reporting project progress
o Adhere to budgets, review with management, and map costs and schedule to relevant risks and opportunities
Presentation and Customer-facing
o Main programmatic conduit between our technical team, our customers, project-specific legal counsel, as well as external contracts and accounting representatives
o Coordinate, compile, and create necessary technical content for kickoff meetings, SRR, PDR, CDR, MRR, and Pre-Ship/FAT reviews
o Coordinate, attend, and/or lead internal and external telecons, weekly status reviews, and TIMs
o Work closely with our Technical Program Lead and upper management on relevant project details
Quality
o Ensure compliance to our AS9100 quality management system, including identifying, implementing, and documenting new processes and procedures to improve engineering and organizational workflow.
o Define, understand, compile, and present End Item Data Packages (EIDP) and other contractually required documentation
o Generate and distribute requirements matrices; then document compliance, verification method, and traceability to verification documentation
Collaboration
o Foster a collaborative and creative work environment that encourages continuous improvement, innovation, learning, and growth of yourself and colleagues
o Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, optics, systems engineering, and manufacturing
Role with the group: Project Manager
Required Skills:
- Experience with quality management systems compliance, such as ISO9001 and/or AS9100
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline; alternatively, 5 or more years of direct engineering experience, preferably mechanical engineering
- Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to translate complex problems to non-experts and stakeholders
- 10+ years in a relevant engineering discipline; preferably in the mechanical design and development, or assembly, integration, and test of optical instruments or space-based systems
- Ability to research and effectively implement new concepts into the workflow
- Highly flexible, multi-discipline mindset with a strong attention to detail
- Proven track record in leading and managing complex engineering projects from concept to production
- Strong understanding of relevant manufacturing techniques, design for manufacturability, and ASME Y14.5 GD&T
- Experience with product development processes, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance
- Experience generating relevant contractual documents including design review presentations, Gantt charts, and technical requirement matrices
Desired Skills:
- Project management experience in the same or similar field, including managing a multi-disciplinary team
- Self-identifies as intellectually curious, proactive, diligent, and collaborative
- Experience building complex instruments, precision assemblies, or machines in small teams, preferably hands-on
- Interest in applying technology and skills to solve challenging problems
- Familiarity with space industry standards, regulations, and best practices
- Experience working in a cleanroom environment, including ESD and FOD protocol
- Project Management Certification (PMP) or other relevant certifications or experience
- Deep technical understanding of the development of scientific instruments
- Familiarity with optomechanical design, optical system design, and/or space systems development or engineering
- Experience with a 3D modeling software such as SolidWorks, Creo, Fusion360, and/or AutoCAD
