The Judicial Council of California is accepting applications for the position of the Principal Manager II in the Public Affairs office.
The Principal Manager II oversees the day-to-day operations of the Public Affairs office and all of its functional areas and performs strategic planning for ongoing office and program enhancements. This position is also tasked with serving as the Public Information Officer for the Chief Justice of California, the Supreme Court of California, the California Courts of Appeal, and the Judicial Council of California, to provide strategic communications counsel to the Chief Justice and executive leadership and regular public affairs program planning and implementation. Additionally, the Principal Manager II also consults with Superior Court of California Leadership on media relations and crisis communications issues.

The successful candidate will be expected to work in the San Francisco or Sacramento office; hybrid work options for employees who live in areas surrounding these locations may be considered.
Responsibilities
- Regular Management Team Meetings (Managers/Supervisors) and related Management- Level Training and Education
- Serves as the Public Information Officer for the Chief Justice of California
- Provides for career development and planning for staff
- Approves time off requests
- Directs the Public Information Program for the Supreme Court of California
- Recommends selection of staff
- Trains staff and proposes internal and external training courses and workshops
- Provides Public Information Officer Services to the California Courts of Appeal
- Administers discipline as required
- Oversees the management and operations of the Public Affairs office
- Supervises the Public Information Program for the Judicial Council of California
- Consults with Superior Court of California Leadership on communications issues
- Reviews and approves time sheets
- Evaluates employee performance and conducts performance reviews
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree, and seven (7) years of professional analytical or managerial experience in assigned function including, but not limited to, program analysis, development, implementation, research, and advising, including at least three (3) years of supervisory/management experience. An additional four years of professional experience as noted above may substitute for the bachelor’s degree. Or, additional directly related experience and/or education may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
OR
Master’s degree in a directly related field for the assigned discipline and four (4) years of professional-level analytical or managerial experience in assigned function including, but not limited to, program analysis, development, implementation, research, and advising, including at least three (3) years of supervisory/management experience.
Desirable Qualifications
- Qualifications in public relations, corporate communications, and/or journalism
- Knowledge of, or skills in, writing and editing, online communications, photography and video creation, and/or program management
- Experience working in a Public Service environment
- Experience interacting with senior level leadership, and in developing and implementing strategic communications plans and programs
