Job Description

Job Category: Keeper
Requisition Number: PRIMA001190

The Saint Louis Zoo is seeking a keeper to join the Primate Unit, which is comprised of the Primate House/Primate Canopy Trails (lemurs, Old and New World monkeys) and the Jungle of the Apes (gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees). Primary placement will be at the Primate House/Primate Canopy Trails initially, although the successful candidate will be cross-trained in both areas to help with coverage and may work in either area for long or short periods depending on staffing needs. This position operates as part of a team-oriented work area, and requires seasonal late night and event coverage duties. Days off for this position are midweek, exact days TBD.

Successful candidates will be positive, adaptable and flexible, able to manage a wide array of duties and responsibilities, follow all protocols and foster a safe working environment, and possess strong communication and teamwork skills. Keepers will perform a wide variety of specialized work including daily animal care, exhibit/area cleaning, enrichment, behavioral training, welfare assessments, animal observations, animal health care, documentation and record-keeping, minor exhibit maintenance, public presentations and tours, and other related duties as needed.

Qualifications: Previous paid keeper experience is preferred. Knowledge of animal behavior and good observation skills are important, and a strong interest in behavior management and animal welfare is critical. Candidates must have the physical ability to perform required duties as assigned, including standing for long periods of time, lifting, bending, climbing, and working in all types of weather. A competitive candidate will actively support and embody the Saint Louis Zoo’s core values of community, creativity, openness, integrity and life-work balance; and will be passionate about providing the highest quality of life for the animals in their charge. All successful candidates for this position will be required to submit to a criminal background check and drug test. COVID vaccinations are required for this position.

Position closes on May 7, 2023.
