Responsibilities: Major tasks include: achieving highest standards of animal welfare and wellness through exemplary animal care, enrichment, and operant conditioning; performing behavioral observations to assess and enhance animal management; maximizing occupational safety through adherence to established protocols; maintaining and enhancing animal habitats and indoor living spaces; safe handling of animals for veterinary health care and research purposes; continual monitoring of the horticulture and custodial needs of the Antelope Area, as well as the overall guest experience needs; maintaining departmental records; assisting with the successful implementation of AZA Species Survival Plan® recommendations; assisting with and raising awareness for WildCare Institute programs and AZA SAFE programs related to ungulates; supporting educational activities such as special Zoo events and formal animal days; collaborating with other zoo personnel as needed to meet the Zoo’s mission; serving as an ambassador for the Zoo and its Antelope Area programs during donor and paid tours, as well as to guests, coworkers, media, AZA, and other outside agencies; and working on special projects, as needed.

Qualifications: Bachelors degree in an animal-related field and previous ungulate care experience is required. A strong background in ungulate care, welfare, management, and operant conditioning preferred. Candidates must have a good safety record and must perform all aspects of this position with safety as a priority. Seeking individuals who are innovative and dedicated to advancing the field of ungulate care and welfare. A successful applicant will be a leader and must have a positive, can-do attitude. They should be self-motivated, resourceful, proactive and forward thinking. Must be a team player and be able to work in line with the Antelope Area Team Values of Hope, Excellence, Respect and Dedication and the Antelope Area Team Norms in order to provide the animals in our care with the highest level of welfare. Must be an effective communicator who can contribute to and support coworkers on an innovative, progressive team. Must have the physical ability to perform required duties as assigned, including standing for long periods of time, lifting, bending and working in all types of weather conditions. The successful candidate for this position will be required to submit to a criminal background check and drug test.
