Position Details

BROAD FUNCTION:
The Director of Safe and Healthy Schools is responsible for providing leadership and oversight for planning, leading, and
maintaining quality school nursing services, school health services, social work services, school safety services, and grant
management. The Director will ensure the provision of safe and healthy school environments that promote the well-being of
students and staff. This position will work closely with ISD administration and teams, school district administrators, staff, and
community members to ensure the health and safety of students and staff throughout Wayne County Districts & Schools.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide leadership and oversight to the Safe and Healthy Schools team to ensure the delivery of high-quality services that meet the needs of students and staff.
Lead and coordinate the work of Wayne RESA’s quality school nursing services, school health services, social work services, and school safety services.
Develop and implement a comprehensive plan for safe and healthy schools that aligns with Wayne RESA’s strategic plan and state/federal regulations.
Provide leadership and oversight for the delivery of high-quality services in the areas of school nursing, health
services, mental health, social work, school safety, and emergency management.
Know relevant research and effective practices in school nursing, school mental health, school safety, and other related areas.
Lead and coordinate the work supporting Wayne RESA’s HRA funds and related strategies.
Lead and coordinate the work of school mental health grants, including C4S, 31n(6), 31(p) TRAILS, 31n(12), and 31o.
Lead and coordinate leadership of the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) Alliance.
Work closely with district and organizational leadership to assess needs and ensure that service expectations are being met.
Lead the organization’s relationships with external partners, including the Michigan Department of Education, Wayne
County Community Mental Health Partners, and State and National Associations.
Lead the coordination of support on behalf of Wayne RESA for events organized to support county-wide efforts (i.e., Live Well Lead Well Summit).
Assist the Deputy Superintendent of Educational Services in interdepartmental collaboration required to implement
technology platforms to support this body of work (i.e., Medicaid billing, bhworks).
Collaborate with local law enforcement, emergency responders, and other community stakeholders to ensure a
coordinated and effective response to emergencies and strong partners throughout Wayne County.
Monitor and stay current with federal and state laws, regulations, and guidelines related to school health, safety, and security.
Plan, use professional judgment, and act effectively to carry out the function of this position within the direction
provided by Wayne RESA’s mission and goals.
Utilize department-identified data points to create supports designed for educational leaders across Wayne County.
Inventory best practices, programs, and services offered by other organizations; identify gaps in available services and
develop plans to meet those needs.
Participate in statewide networks and related national networks to ensure that Wayne County is at the forefront of
ensuring our students are the safest and healthiest in the nation.
Participate as an active team member in organizational projects as assigned.
Collaborate deeply with all departments and sub-departments across Wayne RESA in order to provide timely and valuable information to school leaders in alignment with department goals.
