Analyzes outpatient medical records for pertinent diagnoses and procedures and assigns accurate CPT codes when available at Ankeny Medical Park Surgery Center, L.C. (AMPSC). Completes the abstracting process by collecting and entering predetermined information from the patient record. Other responsibilities include patient admissions, referring and screening phone calls, and utilizing the computer software system for scheduling and statistical documentation. The result of successful performance in this position will ensure accurate patient data bases, optimal reimbursement and meet all State and Federal regulatory standards.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Greets patients and visitors
- Manages incoming calls, routes to appropriate personnel
- Works directly with physicians’ secretaries and nursing staff to schedule procedures utilizing the AMPSC scheduling system.
- Works with the Administrator and Clinical Nurse on producing the daily schedule.
- Collects full or partial payment on admissions and records appropriately.
- Gathers pertinent pre-registration information from the surgeons’ office to create the patients’ chart.
- Collects and records specific data, according to the needs of the facility.
- Displays a working knowledge of all office equipment and computer programs.
- Performs multiple business office tasks, conforms to compliance regulations, and consistently meets the department’s assigned work schedule.
- Supplies documentation when requested by patient, physician, or lawyer with appropriate releases.
- Consistently uses a holistic approach (considering physical, psyche/social, spiritual, educational, safety and related criteria) appropriate to the age of the patients served in the assigned service area.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
- Assists in orientation of new employees to assigned work areas.
- Answers phone and intercom promptly and professionally.
- Performs functions other than described above due to extenuating circumstances.
- Abides by all AMPSC departmental policies.
EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Must possess ability to understand medical terminology
- Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English
- Previous experience with office equipment and computer experience preferred.
- Ability to type 40-50 wpm.
- Excellent interpersonal skills when dealing with co-workers, public, and patients of varying age ranges.
