Job Description

Located in Delta, Utah, the Advanced Clean Energy Storage hub will be a large renewable energy storage facility. Capable of decarbonizing the western United States, the site will enable utility and industrial scale green hydrogen production from renewable energy sources and store the hydrogen in underground salt dome caverns to provide a huge reservoir of renewable fuel for power generation.


The Advanced Clean Energy Storage hub will initially be designed to convert over 220 MW of renewable energy to 100 metric tonnes per day of green hydrogen, which will then be stored in two massive salt caverns capable upon start up of storing more than 300 GWh of dispatchable clean energy.

Opportunity Summary

The Plant Manager is responsible for the operation, maintenance, engineering, and management of the facility in accordance with the Operations and Maintenance Agreement and other Project Agreements. The Plant Manager serves as the primary interface with the Owner, serves as community liaison, and is responsible for interacting with regulatory agencies as directed by the Owner. The Plant Manager provides leadership to all plant personnel and is responsible for employee selection, technical training, and maintaining employee qualifications. The Plant Manager ensures that the facility is operated in compliance with all applicable safety, environmental, and contractual requirements. The Plant Manager is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the image of the Plant and the Owner within the community and the industry. The Plant Manager has direct responsibility for maximizing the profitability of the plant.

Primary Functions

  • Continue to enhance image of plant as a good neighbor to the community and the environment. Encourage involvement and participation of plant staff in community activities
  • Complete special projects as required by the Operations Director
  • Control and maintain plant expenditures utilizing budgeting, forecasting, and cost accounting methods. Establish annual budgets for the facility in accordance with the O&M Agreement
  • Administer project agreements including O&M Agreement, Power Purchase Agreement, Long Term Service Agreement, and Interconnection Agreements. Ensure facility is operated in accordance with these project agreements
  • Assist in the evaluation of equipment problems and failures
  • Manage and oversee the performance of planned and unplanned plant outages to optimize production, minimize cost and enhance plant profitability
  • Safety is of paramount importance in a hydrogen generation facility due to the flammability and potentially explosive nature of hydrogen. Must be able to promote attitude of safety awareness for all site personnel including actively ensuring the safety of others
  • Employ sound business principles, best in class techniques and prudent utility practices to enhance plant profitability
  • Provide leadership to all plant personnel
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable environmental permits, regulations, and agreements with neighboring landowners. Review and approve required environmental and regulatory reports
  • Conduct periodic reviews of plant policies and procedures to ensure they reflect current plant goals, operating requirements, and the industry’s best in class
  • Develop and implement staffing, training and qualification plans. Ensure goals of all personnel are aligned with goals of facility and Owner
  • Implementation of the plant's Safety, Operations, Maintenance, Administrative, Training, Chemistry, and Environmental Compliance programs to ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of the plant
  • Act as liaison to community and regulatory agencies
  • Employ outside resources as necessary to resolve technical and administrative issues
  • Provide hands-on support for operations and maintenance as required

All NAES managers and supervisors have a direct and important role in ensuring that all work is performed in a healthy and safe manner. Effectiveness in carrying out this responsibility is part of the evaluation of each supervisor’s performance.

This includes, but is not limited to, the following functions:

  • Analyze result, write work orders, train and educate to eliminate hazards, at-risk behavior and meet company regulatory requirements
  • Establish and lead these activities following any rules, requirements or guidance established in your business unit, group or division
  • Respond to Incidents: respond to all safety-related incidents including, but not limited to injuries, incidents and near misses; write a report that explains what happened, identify the cause and recommend corrective action following any established business unit or division practice. Follow up as necessary to ensure that corrective action is taken
  • Conduct Inspections and Observations: establish within the department a regular inspection of the work area and a safety observation process of work being performed.
  • Address Safety at all Group Meetings
  • Involve all NAES teammates in the activities
  • Regular and Frequent Contacts: conduct one-on-one contact sessions with workers to discuss safety issues, communicate expectations and coach safe behaviors, e.g., whether the employee is wearing all required personal protective equipment
  • Conduct/Support Regular Safety Meetings (at least monthly)
  • Conduct Regular Observation Tours: Conduct no less than two safety observation tours of high risk activities e.g. confined space to verify that employees are performing the work in accordance with safe practices, company procedures and OSHA regulations

Working Relationships

The Plant Manager reports to the Operations Director and is responsible for the total site staff. The direct reports are the O&M Manager, EHS Compliance Coordinator and the Administrative Manager. The Plant Manager is the single point of contact to Owner on all matters pertaining to the operation and maintenance of the plant.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required.

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

Work Schedule

Regular scheduled work days are Monday to Friday during regular dayshift hours. Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with the possibility of weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, work load and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required. Some travel may be involved to participate in Manager, Owner, User Group, or other offsite meetings.

Compensation

The initial compensation range available for this position is $175,000 to $200,000 base salary.

Job Qualifications

We are seeking a candidate who has a thorough understanding of hydrogen production processes such as steam methane reforming, electrolysis, or other methods used in the facility. Must have proficiency in operating and monitoring equipment, understanding process parameters, maintaining appropriate operating conditions, and troubleshooting operational issues.

  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or equivalent desired
  • Results-oriented problem solver, motivator and team builder with a successful track record in managing change initiatives for improving the technical, human resources, business and financial performance of the plant
  • Demonstrated skills in environmental management, budget development and control, organizational development, and contract administration
  • Must have strong leadership, motivational, and communication (oral and written) skills, including the ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization
  • Must possess a strong commitment to safety protocols to include hazard analysis, risk assessment, and emergency response procedures
  • Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license at all times
