JOB SUMMARY
Under the direction and supervision of the Planning Director, the Planning Technician performs entry-level paraprofessional work. The position devotes a large amount of time to performing routine administrative tasks while working closely with the public to provide service to Planning Department customers. Successful incumbents may be asked to perform professional-level duties in a limited capacity as a "trainee".
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Provide support to planning staff members and the public by conducting research and preparing information.
Prepares maps, charts, tables of limited complexity.
May assist with plan review and zoning applications to ensure compliance with requirements.
Assists the Planning Director with the City"s Comprehensive Plan update with specific sustainability and resiliency tasks.
Participates in special projects as assigned, including assistance in guiding the City"s initial sustainability planning efforts and assistance in drafting sustainability policies for inclusion into the City"s Comprehensive Plan update.
Conducts landscape inspections.
Develops and maintains tracking systems, files, and records.
May assist in preparation of agendas, reports, and public notices.
Assists with preparation of public notices.
May be requested to attend public meetings.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Educations and Experience:
Associate"s Degree in landscape architecture, planning, geography, sustainability or a related field is required.
Bachelor"s Degree in engineering, planning, geography, landscape architecture, sustainability or a related field is preferred.
Two years of experience in plan review, zoning administration, and/or site inspections is preferred.
Special Qualifications:
Valid Florida Driver"s License with acceptable driving record.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to learn state planning laws, local codes and regulations.
Ability to learn general and technical planning and sustainability concepts.
Ability to demonstrate computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.
Ability to learn geographic information system mapping
Ability to communicate clearly in English, both orally and in writing.
Ability to prepare various planning and sustainability reports.
Ability to understand and interpret complex written material, analyze facts, exercise judgment and arrive at valid conclusions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, and other City employees.
Ability to walk, stand, or sit for extended periods of time.
Ability to operate assigned equipment or vehicles.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Mostly sedentary work which requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Additional physical abilities required:
Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.
Mental Acuity: Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
Speaking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely.
Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
Visual Acuity: Visual Acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned or to make general observations of facilities or structures.
Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a dynamic environment that requires incumbent to be sensitive to change and responsive to changing goals and priorities.
