Job Description

This position is based at our clinic location at the Regional Medical Center-San Jose.
Physician Assistants, in accordance with standardized procedures, perform certain clinical duties customarily carried out by physicians, and perform other related duties as assigned.
Incumbents perform clinical assessments and care management services which include construction and interpretation of histories and physical exams; perform initial and periodic physical examinations, mental status examinations, and medical history on both in-patients and out-patients; order appropriate laboratory tests, x-rays, EKG, and comparable procedures, according to criteria previously established by the responsible physician(s); draw blood specimens for testing and perform other comparable procedures as directed by the supervising physician when personnel who customarily perform such procedures are not available; write orders to increase, decrease or change medication (subject to checking and counter-signing by physician); initiate consultations and monitor scheduling of patients for special tests; identify problems and develop and implement treatment plans; make daily rounds to observe and record pertinent progress of patients, updating and summarizing charts, changing orders when appropriate, and notifying the responsible physician(s) of changes in the patient's condition; counsel patients and families as to preventive care, medical problems, psychological problems and use of prescribed treatment and drugs; assist in operative and other procedures; and participate in clinical investigations.
This Physician Assistant position may perform delegated functions as appropriate to their scope of practice. In general, the scope of practice includes the routine management of chronic stable medical conditions and minor acute care according to approved protocols, medical and surgical procedures according to approved standardized procedures, triage, medication management and care planning. This position may provide patient care in the Ambulatory Care setting, Hospital Ward setting, and Operating Room setting. Position will include on-call duties with notice. The Physician Assistant will also perform surgical duties consistent within the scope of a PA-First Assistant.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.


For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UCSF provides expert treatment for all aspects of musculoskeletal injuries including inpatient and outpatient surgical care, rehabilitation, and orthotics and prosthetics. Our physicians have specific training and experience in a broad range of orthopaedic specialties such as sports medicine, trauma, joint replacement, pediatrics, oncology, spine, shoulder and elbow, foot and ankle, and hand. The Department is internationally recognized for its work in patient care, education, and research. Our basic and translational research programs focus on cartilage and disc regeneration, fracture healing, molecular and stem cell biology, bioengineering, and musculoskeletal development.

Required Qualifications

  • California Physician Assistant License/certificate
  • Ability to satisfactorily perform job duties as defined in the job duties/ functions
  • Incumbents for positions included in the Physician Assistant series are expected to meet the legal requirements to practice as a Physician Assistant as determined by graduation from a training program approved by the Board of Medical Examiners of the State of California; to be certified by the State Board of Medical Examiners or the National Board of Medical Examiners; and possess the skills, knowledges, and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position
  • Maintains open communication channels with all members of the health care team
  • Demonstrates ability to work cooperatively with others
  • Complies with dress code, including appropriate identification
  • This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations in addition to primary site (Regional Medical Center-San Jose)
  • Knowledgeable about and adheres to all applicable Medical Center and department specific infection controls, health and safety policies and procedures, including annual safety training
  • Certified by the National Commission on Certification and licensed in the State of California
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, professional, computer and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with a diverse professional and patient population
  • CPR/BLS
  • Prior experience in medical office environment
  • Must be able to document competent performance of the skills required to perform in the role described
  • Starts work at scheduled time and completes work on time
  • Exemplary customer service
  • DEA certification

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience and training in orthopaedics

License/Certification

  • California Physician Assistant License/certificate
  • CPR/BLS
  • Certified by the National Commission on Certification and licensed in the State of California
