Shift: Part time, Days, Every other weekend, 24 hrs/week
Reporting to the Clinical Manager or designee, with accountability to the care team, provides basic nursing and personal care to patients as delegated by and under the direction of a Registered Nurse and Licensed Practicing Nurse. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age(s) of the patients served on the assigned unit.
1. Assists patients with personal care needs including bathing, grooming, oral care, eating, use of bedpan or urinal, positioning, answering and responding to patient call lights, bed making, etc. under the supervision of a RN/LPN.
2. Assists with exercising and ambulating patient; utilizes correct body mechanics while assisting with patient mobility; maintains physical safety and comfort of patient under supervision of a RN/LPN.
3. Obtains patient vital signs, input and output checks, and accu-checks, and reports abnormalities to the nurse. As directed by RN/LPN performs procedures such as EKG’s, perineal care, emptying of foley bags, application of restraints, backrubs, etc. Collects specimens such as urine, feces, sputum, and delivers as necessary. Documents basic patient care into electronic medical record.
4. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships. Acts with integrity, consistency and respect for differing views. Identifies factors that interfere with effective team functioning and contributes in a resolution. Treats each individual with compassion, respect and integrity.
5. Assists nursing and clerical staff with admitting, discharging, transferring, ambulating, transporting, and observing patients to ensure safety as directed. Adequately answers unit phones and can effectively direct phone calls to the appropriate parties. May perform duties of an Observation Assistant as needed.
6. Transports medications, which are not controlled substances. May be authorized to access secured medication storage locations to perform job related functions.
7. Participates in and supports Continuous Quality Improvement activities and attends continuing education classes as required.
8. Safely and consistently operates patient handling equipment, utilizing knowledge of correct usage of equipment. Provides care of equipment and supplies on unit as assigned.
9. Adheres to all Northwest Community Hospital standards, policies, and procedures.
1. The level of knowledge normally obtained through the completion of high school. Candidates who are part of a CNA apprenticeship program will also be considered. Experience in an acute care setting is preferred.
2. Completion of an accredited CNA course and the successful completion of the CNA certification exam, EMT or paramedics training course, current enrollment in an accredited nursing program with completion of at least one major clinical medical or surgical rotation required.
3. Current CPR certification from the American Heart Association.
4. Access to an automobile and valid Illinois driver's license or arrangements made for reliable transportation.
5. Knowledge of and/or experience in the correct use of body mechanics.
6. Data entry or order entry experience on a computer preferred, basic computer skills required.
7. The interpersonal skills necessary to interact with patients, families and hospital personnel.
8. The organization skills necessary to prioritize and accomplish multiple work assignments in a proficient manner under minimal supervision.
9. The verbal and written English skills necessary to clearly and effectively communicate information.
10. The ability to be empathetic to the patient's needs and well-being.
11. The ability to proficiently navigate computer software systems with accurate keyboard skills for the entry and retrieval of patient data.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Moderate physical effort. Requires prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending or sitting. Requires frequent lifting of average weight material and lifting or transferring of patients, potentially without assistance. Must be able to carry 15 lbs up to 30 lbs. Requires occasional lifting and carrying of 30 lbs to 70 lbs and occasional pushing/pulling of up to 300 lbs in wheeled equipment.
2. Flow of work and character of duties involves normal mental, visual, auditory attention much or all of the time with manual dexterity is required for sustained periods of time.
3. Requires visual acuity adequate to assess patients and read/record patient charts.
4. Requires auditory acuity adequate to converse with patients, take phone orders, and receive directions from physicians and coworkers who are wearing masks.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Conditions are acceptable. Several disagreeable elements or hazards are occasionally present; i.e., infectious diseases, high pressure medical gases, biohazardous materials and potentially adverse home environments.
