Why does the job exist?

The purpose of the position is to provide advanced paralegal support for the Legal Bureau of Risk Management. The position will be responsible for intensive and highly technical litigation support, including performing legal research, case management, analysis of legal decisions, opinions, and rulings, and compiling and summarizing substantive information on statutes and specific legal subjects. This position will also be responsible for legislative analysis, rule promulgation, and processing subpoenas and public records requests.

How does it get done?

Review, analyze, research, and respond to constituent inquires. Review, analyze and process records requests. Review and prepare draft responses to IPRA requests and track deadlines. Maintain files in accordance with retention schedules and the New Mexico Public Records Act. Provide Litigation Support under direct supervision, by maintaining, tracking, and answering deadlines. Opening, organizing, and maintaining all litigation files of the Risk Management Division. Scheduling litigation events, including depositions and mediations. Review and prepare mediation support. Case organization and management. Prepare discovery, motions, deposition notices, subpoenas, and other pleadings. Conduct interviews of witnesses or other basic investigative functions, including background checks. Prepare and organize exhibits and trial materials. Conducts legal research, including summarizing research for later use by attorney. Present verbal briefing and written analysis on diverse subject matters.

Ideal Candidate

  • Experience working with public employees.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience with confidential transactions and record keeping.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite operating and database systems.

Minimum Qualification

Associate's degree in Paralegal Studies and two (2) years of experience drafting and preparing legal correspondence, conducting legal research and maintaining a case management/tracking system. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated December 19, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS"), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.

Office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT), and extensive personal computer and phone usage with extended periods of sitting. Some standing, bending and reaching may be required. Some travel may be required, with occasional use of state vehicle. May work extra hours.
