Why does the job exist?

Provides paralegal and administrative assistance to attorneys in the Office of General Counsel. The position will primarily assist attorneys with condemnation and inverse condemnation litigation, and other right-of-way matters, including quiet title lawsuits, encroachment proceedings, and various matters involving outdoor advertising, utilities and rail. Preparation of condemnation cases will include review of right-of-way maps and title reports in order to identify persons or entities having a interest in the property that is the subject of the condemnation lawsuit. Position is also responsible for electronic filing of condemnation and other pleadings and overseeing the litigation calendar.

How does it get done?

Position requires electronic legal research, experience with the preparation of various legal pleadings, working knowledge of maps and title reports, experience interviewing witnesses and preparing trial exhibits.

Who are the customers?

Internal executive staff and New Mexico Department of Transportation personnel statewide.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have:
  • Direct experience with real estate matters, including title reports and legal descriptions; and
  • Litigation experience including pretrial and trial preparation.

Minimum Qualification

Associate's degree in Paralegal Studies and two (2) years of experience drafting and preparing legal correspondence, conducting legal research and maintaining a case management/tracking system. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required.
