Job Summary
Location: Lansing, Michigan
This position is responsible for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of all energy related assets located within a central utility complex at the GM Lansing or GM Delta Complex.
Assets include Air handling Units, Chilled Water, Cooling Tower, Thermal Storage, Compressed Air, Hot Water and Wastewater Treatment.
Employees will be represented by IBEW Local 352. The pay rate for this position during the probationary period of six months is $38.85 per hours. Once successfully completing the probationary period the rate increases to $43.17 per hour.
Key Accountabilities
- Performs all station shift operation and maintenance, including startup and shutdown of main plant components and auxiliaries.
- Conducts routine tours of the plant to inspect equipment and provide feedback to other employees.
- Performs routine cycle chemistry testing and makes the necessary adjustments to optimize efficiency. Checks daily consumption rates of chemicals, gasses, fuels, water, and other consumables; monitors inventories and initiates action to replenish when appropriate.
- Perform plant switching and tagging of equipment in accordance with approved procedures and prudent operations and maintenance practices.
- Maintains accuracy of shift operating logs, records, time sheets, work orders and other administrative documents related to the power plant.
- Performs electrical and mechanical inspections, troubleshooting, and maintenance tasks under direction of Management when assigned.
- Respond to abnormalities and take corrective actions consistent with established operating procedures and good engineering practices.
- Complies with all site safety requirements and procedures. Identifies safety hazards and takes corrective actions as necessary.
- Perform operations in accordance with established SOPs and job safety standards.
Additional Accountabilities
- Performs routine preventative and predictive maintenance on all systems and equipment; supports corrective maintenance efforts on selected equipment when properly trained or supervised.
- Develops, assists, and revises operations and maintenance related procedures.
- Assists other team members and works with all departments to support the operation in achieving its goals.
- Communicates with other company personnel on-site and at other locations. Represents the Company in dealing with the public, steam and power customers, vendors, contractors, regulators, and other non-company personnel.
- Reads and records gauges and meters. Performs routine operational tests and adjustments on all power plant systems and components as required.
- Performs other duties necessary to fulfill plant requirements.
- Investigates plant problems, incidents, accidents, and unusual events, and provides analyses, recommendations, reports, and appropriate follow-up plans.
- Becomes lead system representative on assigned systems.
- Performs and maintains good housekeeping standards and related duties.
- Willingness to work scheduled and unscheduled overtime and respond to off-hour call-ins when contacted.
Qualifications
- Working knowledge of utility and power plant mechanical and electrical equipment, including: Chillers, motors, pumps, fluid systems, chemical handling, waste-water treatment systems, centrifugal air compressors, AC and DC electrical distribution and control systems, etc. and associated maintenance functions of the equipment.
- Knowledge of power plant safety policies and procedures, especially in areas such as chemical handling, high-energy systems, confined spaces, first aid, rotating machinery, and heavy equipment.
- Valid driver’s license is required.
- High school diploma or GED required. Associates degree or Technical School certificate preferred. (5) years’ experience in the utility complex operations.Shift work (nights and or days) is required, including weekends and holidays
- Ability to learn and become proficient in all site-specific systems and sub-systems.
- Ability to locate, trouble-shoot, and adjust defects in mechanical equipment and/or maintain, install, modify and trouble-shoot plant electrical systems and equipment.
- Ability to use basic hand tools, portable electric and pneumatic tools, and basic rigging equipment such as winches, hoists, and slings.
- Good communications in both verbal and written forms.
- Knowledge of and ability to understand fundamental principles related to physics, mathematics, AC & DC electrical theory, heat transfer and fluid flow, thermal-dynamics, and chemistry.
- Knowledge of and experience in mechanical maintenance, rigging, rotating machine repair, fabrication, machine alignment, basic vibration analysis, and using electrical test equipment.

Vision requirements for this position include close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, along with depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Working conditions: The employee performs job duties in an industrial facility with a very loud noise level.
