Job Duties

Hourly Position- Provide direct nutrition assessment and evaluation of all patients in the nutritional element of the Northern VA Mental Health Institute Food Service Department. These services respond to consultative requests by physicians. Provide nutrition education to patients, families, and if necessary, members of the resident centers to which some patients are discharged. Participate in patient treatment plans and is a member of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. Provide training for Food Service staff.

Minimum Qualifications

• Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Thorough knowledge of the principles of nutrition and diet therapy.
• Registration by the American Dietetic Association is required.
• Working knowledge of quality improvement principles.
• Ability to work with mentally ill patients.
• Food Management Certification. A Northern Virginia Food Management Certification must be obtained within 60 days of employment at NVMHI.
• B.S. degree in Foods/Nutrition is required
• Know the principles of conducting nutritional assessments and evaluations of patients.

These positions are hourly/wage and not eligible for benefits. Hourly (wage) employees may not work more than 29 hours a week and are limited to working 1500 hours in a year.
