GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
The Outpatient Psychiatry Department at Massachusetts General Hospital is seeking a full-time Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner to provide clinical services embedded within a team-based care treatment team. The team will consist of a psychiatrist, a psychologist, a nurse practitioner, a social worker, and a medical assistant. The team will function within a general psychiatry outpatient clinic, serving the mental health needs of patients under the care of MGH primary care physicians.
The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (NP) develops, implements and evaluates a program of specialized health care for the patients serviced including performing diagnostic evaluations and medication management. The Psych NP promotes a collaborative relationship and effort between members of the team, continuity of patient care and efficient use of resources. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides direct care to a select patient population in collaboration with the physician.
- Performs medically delegated aspects of patient care as agreed upon by nursing and medical administrators according to practice guidelines.
- Consults medical providers as appropriate.
- Collaborates with office staff and physicians to facilitate a comprehensive plan of care and coordinate resources.
- Performs (oversees/assures completion of) specialized procedures particular to the select population mutually agreed upon with collaborating physician and as per department guidelines.
- Utilizes advanced practice knowledge to identify, prevent or solve complex and/or recurring patient care problems.
- Writes orders which are in accord with current clinical and hospital guidelines and policies.
- Follows and manages patients (in collaboration with TOP team) enhancing continuity of care.
- Reviews findings with the collaborating physician as appropriate
- Performs and records the patient history and physical exam
- Maintains and practices in accord with Psych NP guidelines per state and hospital regulations.
- Participates in shared pager coverage model for nights and weekends along with other Psychiatric Advanced Nurse Practitioners across the Department
Provides consultation to other clinicians on the team, as well as to those within the department.
- Serves on appropriate intra and interdepartmental committees.
- Serves as a resource to staff in area(s) of expertise.
Participates in the development of formal and informal educational programs for office based clinical support staff.
- Develops educational programs within area of expertise.
- Collaborates with team members, office staff, administrators and departmental colleagues to meet staff and patient educational needs.
Monitors patient outcomes in accordance with defined standards of patient care.
- Facilitates patient movement through the system and efficient use of resources through interdepartmental collaboration.
- Collaborates with interdisciplinary team members to plan, implement and evaluate pertinent change in practice and health care delivery.
- Identifies system-wide factors contributing to undesirable outcomes, such as complications, increased length of stay and over utilization of services.
Supports research efforts to advance knowledge and to promote evidence based practice.
- Evaluates current research findings for clinical specialty and determines applicability to practice.
- Evaluates own practice and program effectiveness.
- Identifies pertinent nursing and health delivery problems for investigation.
- Assists nursing and medical colleagues in research efforts.
Responsible for own professional growth and maintenance of required credentials.
- Identifies own learning needs and goals.
- Maintains the standards and educational requirements specific to the position,certification and licensure.
- Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills based on current health care practice/research.
- Takes responsibilities for leadership and participation on committees and task forces within the department and the hospital.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Provision of episodic, consultative, and recurring care to adult patients (including geriatric and those with substance use disorder) in the outpatient psychiatry clinic located in the Wang building and via telehealth platforms.
- Valid Massachusetts RN licensure in good standing
- Valid Massachusetts Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner licensure in good standing.
- 4) Maintain effective working relationships with collaborative leadership teams and interdisciplinary health care teams and appropriate community providers
- Relying on advanced training in psychodynamics, pathophysiology, physical assessment, pharmacology, treatment intervention, the psych NP provides an assessment and assistance with establishing comprehensive plans that address a broad range of concerns for the patient with psychiatric disorders:
- 1) Complete biopsychosocial and psychopharmacological evaluations
- 2) Develop treatment plans based on assessments and provide appropriate treatment
- 3) Maintain working relationship with patient and/or family while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries
- 4) Maintain effective working relationships with collaborative leadership teams and interdisciplinary health care teams and appropriate community providers
- 5) Document in the medical record according to departmental policies and procedures

- 2) Develop treatment plans based on assessments and provide appropriate treatment
- Buprenorphine Waiver required (or willingness to acquire waiver in first 90 days).
- Master’s degree in Nursing
- Previous psychiatric nursing experience required.SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
- Current federal and state controlled substance certification/registration or eligibility.
- 1) Complete biopsychosocial and psychopharmacological evaluations
- 3) Maintain working relationship with patient and/or family while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries
- Previous Psych NP experience preferred
- A qualified candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal communication, conflict resolution and organizational skills.
