Neuropsychology Technician
- (3241363)GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT
Working with the Neuropsychology Outcome Assessment Laboratory (NOAL), within the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), the Neuropsychology Technician (a.k.a. Psychometrician or Psychometrist) will support several staff neuropsychologists in conducting clinical neuropsychological evaluations and clinical research studies. Our staff neuropsychologists provide care for individuals across the lifespan (children through adults) who have sustained the full spectrum of mild traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), including working with athletes who have sustained concussions, civilians who have sustained mild TBIs, and retired athletes and military veterans who have experienced repetitive neurotrauma and who are being evaluated for mental health problems and mild cognitive impairment later in life.
Working under the supervision of staff neuropsychologists and postdoctoral neuropsychology fellows, the Neuropsychology Technician administers a wide range of standardized neuropsychological tests to both adult and pediatric patients with a diverse range of acquired or developmental neurocognitive disorders. Testing is done in conjunction with the clinical interview of the patient/family member(s)/caregiver(s) by the staff neuropsychologist, who may also conduct some of the testing. The Neuropsychology Technician will also score the tests and compile a data sheet for each patient. Other responsibilities include maintenance of test equipment and record forms in working condition and good supply, as well as establishing/maintaining appropriate testing environments. The Neuropsychology Technician will also assist staff with clinical research studies and engage in professional development and educational activities as needed (e.g., staff training seminars, attendance at grand rounds/departmental meetings, and assisting with data preparation and/or statistical analyses needed for publications and presentations).
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist with materials management, supply, inventory, and ordering of program materials.
- Research activities to include pre-screening and recruitment of research subjects, coordinating study visits, data collection/entry, assisting in grant submission preparation, preparing research for presentation at conferences and for publication in medical and scientific journals, performing literature reviews, preparing progress reports, and keeping current with IRB and regulatory requirements of research projects.
- Maintain an up-to-date and thorough knowledge of hospital policies and procedures relating to patient care and safety.
- Administer standardized neuropsychological tests that assess cognitive and behavioral functioning (including intelligence, attention/executive functions, memory, language, visuospatial abilities, mood, and personality) to both adult and pediatric patients.
- Create summary score sheets for each patient, detailing their performance by cognitive domain compared to the normative sample for each test.
- Observe the patient during and after testing, record behavioral observations and report to the supervising clinician any information that may affect the validity of test results.
- Enter scores and other data into a database as necessary.
- Accurately score all tests per standardized methods. Maintain an up-to-date and thorough knowledge of the scoring procedures for a wide variety of neuropsychological measures.

- Assist with maintenance of test equipment and record forms.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- Establish rapport with patients, being sensitive to their psychiatric and/or neurological state over a testing session of up to several hours.
- Help establish and maintain an appropriate testing environment.
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED
- Facility with learning new computer applications.
- Ability to conduct reference and literature searches using PubMed and other search engines and perform Internet searches using various search engines.
- Strong interpersonal skills and communication skills and ability to interact with other professional and administrative staff across multiple departments and to conduct all interactions in a mature, professional demeanor.
- Knowledge of current and developing trends in areas of professional expertise.
- Excellent written communication skills. Superb proofreading skills.
- Administrative skills to meet the regulatory compliance required by IRB reporting.
- Clinical knowledge as required for patient interviews and chart reviews.
- Ability to take direction from clinical supervisors.
- Experience with common PC computer software including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook, and reference management software such as Reference Manager or EndNote.
- Ability to compile and manage data, analyze information, and produce reports.
- High level time management skills requiring exceptional organizational skills and the ability to organize time and prioritize effectively. This includes the ability to ask for direction when appropriate and the flexibility to handle multiple tasks and deadline pressures.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with facility to interact professionally at all levels with, and elicit cooperation from, diverse patient populations, including patients with significant cognitive, behavioral, and psychiatric problems as well as ability to plan and initiate new activities.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to multi-task and prioritize.
- Excellent observational skills and the ability to record and convey those observations systematically and reliably through writing.
- Ability to sensitively and appropriately work with, handle, store and communicate confidential information.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team along with ability to take initiative where needed and effectively problem solve. Ability and willingness to learn new research and administrative skills.
- Knowledge and experience with human subjects research and IRB requirements.
Additional skills (preferred not required)

- Knowledge of SPSS
EDUCATION
High School diploma or GED required: Bachelor’s degree required in psychology, neuroscience, or both is strongly preferred.
EXPERIENCE
Some clinical experience interacting with patients and healthcare systems as related to the duties and responsibilities specified is preferred. Prior experience or knowledge of psychological test administration preferred, but not required. CITI certification preferred. Some experience with clinical research, IRB administration, and data management is helpful.

MGH Waltham: Outpatient clinical care facility located in Waltham, Massachusetts. Shared office space with separate workstation and normal office conditions.
Additional work responsibilities may be conducted virtually (remote work).
Ability to commute between locations is needed as is a valid MA driver’s license.
