UMMC Midtown Campus, one of two campuses of the University of Maryland Medical Center, has had a long history of working to keep our community healthy and has grown to become a trusted teaching hospital for medical and surgical care in Baltimore City.


Located in Baltimore’s cultural center near the historic Mount Vernon neighborhood, UMMC Midtown Campus is a 180-bed, community teaching hospital with a focus on helping people manage chronic diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, pulmonary conditions, and infectious diseases.



Main Function:


The endoscopic tech is a member of the health care team who performs specific technical skills and implements direct patient care for patients undergoing upper and lower endoscopic examination and related procedures. The endoscopic tech works under the supervision of the physician and the clinical nurse.


Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Assists other staff in the completion of their responsibilities when indicated.
  • Prepares endoscopes needed for the day’s daily assignment.
  • Transports supplies & specimens to and from designated area.
  • Maintains general cleanliness of the unit.
  • Assists with between case decontamination of procedure rooms.
  • Collects laboratory specimens according to hospital policy and procedure.
  • Demonstrates competency in assisting with all endoscopic procedures.
  • Cleans & disinfects endoscopes & accessories both manual & with the use of the Steris Machine
  • Completes disinfection of equipment & accessories utilizing aseptic technique.
  • Independently participates in on-call system as required.
  • Assists with positioning of patients in accordance with proper body alignment under supervision of the RN.
  • Performs other errands and duties as requested.
  • Prepares and make available any special equipment needed by physician.


Qualifications


Education:


  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate.


Experience:


  • Previous nursing assistant experience required. Previous GI experience required.


Contacts:


  • Patients, visitors, employees, physicians and public at large.


Physical Demands:


  • Good physical and mental health, turning, bending, stretching and lifting. Also requires standing in one position for one to two hours for colonoscopic procedures. The endoscopic tech is required to reposition sedated patients as necessary.


Working Conditions:


Works in well lighted well ventilated hospital environment. The endoscopic tech is on call according to schedule and must maintain beeper or phone contact with the hospital.
