Job Description
UCAR is excited to announce the job opening for a Network Technician III. This position is responsible for maintaining general operations within UCAR's Data Center Services Colorado (DCSC) facilities while collaborating extensively with the NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center (NWSC) in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and COO Facilities services.
Where You Will Work:
At UCAR|NCAR|UCP, you will work alongside a dedicated team of professionals conducting critical research and community outreach to solve complex Earth system science problems including climate change, air pollution, extreme weather, floods, drought, wildfires, and space weather, all with the goal of improving human life and reducing economic loss. Each of us, from scientists to the professionals who support their work, serves the public and a collaborative community of scientists in our mission to understand the complex processes that make up the Earth system, from the ocean floor to the Sun’s core.
Job Location: Boulder, Colorado
Job Type: Hybrid; this position requires on-site work approximately 3 days/week at Boulder facilities.

HOW YOU WILL MAKE AN IMPACT AT UCAR
Here is a brief outline of what one would expect to be responsible for in this role.
Key Responsibilities
  • Participates as part of a team, to lead or direct in support of network equipment and infrastructure installation projects as needed or directed by NETS Management
  • Create new, and updated existing Computer-Aided Design (CAD) files per project, work request, or management requirements
  • Maintain green initiatives within the Data Centers by repurposing used hardware and recycling waste appropriately
  • Maintain operations of DCSC facilities following established procedures and guidelines
  • Troubleshooting technical issues with infrastructure systems, including equipment monitoring system management, CRAC, UPS, and environmental sensors
  • Contributes to Data Center Asset management system and perform self-managed internal audits
  • Maintain security access control data for Data Center Facilities
  • Secondary DCSC point-of-contact to NWSC NOC and Facilities Operations. Provide timely and effective two-way communications on infrastructure systems status information, including maintenance, new service installations, and planned and unplanned outages.
  • Leads or participates as part of a team in installation, configuration, integration, testing, optimization, troubleshooting, and documentation of a controller-based monitoring system including UPS, Ethernet, and out-of-band
  • Assist in Emergency planning and preparedness

Successful candidates will ensure their application materials speak to the following criteria:
Education & Experience
  • Sunbird (Power IQ) User / Administrator
  • Basic skills in configuring IT and other SNMP and technical devices.
  • TileFlow CFD Modelling software user
  • Jira Service Desk Agent
  • Graduation certificate from a technical institute in an electrical or mechanical area
  • Five years of relevant experience
  • Autodesk CAD user
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Desired, but not required:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Previous experience and a level of proficiency in installing, relocating, and removal of IT equipment (servers, network, and rack systems, including power and network cable management )
  • Ability To travel as much as 30 days per year and to occasionally work evenings, weekends, and periodically be on 24-hour call including during inclement weather events when required
  • Ability to work as part of a team, provide hands-on support for IT Systems Administrators and resolve issues with and without direction
  • Working ability with construction tools, building techniques, and fabrication techniques as it applies to data centers and networking environments
  • Working knowledge of digital data communication principles, techniques, and protocols primarily centered around 802.3 Ethernet at 10, 100, 1000, 10,000Mb speeds, and power over Ethernet (PoE).
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with UCAR staff, by listening, understanding, and courteously responding to reasonable requests
  • Respond to work requests promptly and attentively within designated timelines and perform work with as little disruption to the workplace and services as possible
