ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Tucson is seeking a high energy, creative, problem-solving Network Engineer to join the City’s Network Engineering Team.

The City of Tucson Information Technology Department (ITD) provides support services for all departments within the City, including citizen services, public safety, public works, back-office business applications, project management, analytics & GIS, and web applications. The diversity of City business functions and supporting technologies makes for a dynamic work environment that is both challenging and rewarding.

This position reports directly to the IT Manager- Network Engineering and is responsible for the daily operation and support of the design, configuration and maintenance of all layer 2 and layer 3 networking functions.

The Information Technology Department is a 24/7 operation. The successful candidate will be required to respond to emergencies occurring after normal business hours.

General Description

  • Develop network architecture and network design documentation
  • Resolving network problems through research, network installation and customization, network administration and network management support
  • Maintain documentation on network configuration
  • Supporting complex network infrastructure including routers, switches, firewalls, security appliances, wireless controllers, and access points
  • Maintain network documentation as relates to network configuration, network diagrams and process
  • Gathering network metrics and network reporting
  • Implement data network infrastructure components
  • Maintain local area network, wide area network, and wireless network
  • Implement network and security infrastructure
  • Ensure overall network reliability of 99.9%
  • Provide network security by configuring routers, switches, and firewalls to meet security standards
  • Assist with network capacity planning to meet network requirements and network growth
  • Implementing functional network infrastructure (LAN, WLAN, WAN)
  • Passion to stay current with industry standards, mew technologies and best practices through attending extensive training and performing research
  • Solid customer service communication skills are critical as well as the ability and willingness to communicate effectively and appropriately in an empathetic and understanding manner
  • Maintain routers and switches on the enterprise network with the latest software and best practices
  • Analyze network statistics and network design
  • Maintain and update network security monitoring tools
  • Planning and designing the network infrastructure and enterprise network solutions
  • Provide support for network connectivity or related network issues
  • Ensure hardware and software complies with latest security requirements

Essential Functions

  • Engineers, designs, tests and implements Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks and Wireless Area Networks topologies and configurations. Monitors and optimizes performance of the operational data network.
  • Installs, maintains, and troubleshoots routers and switches in located City equipment closets.
  • Evaluates vendor products for Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks and Wireless Area Networks hardware and software and makes recommendations for purchases that are consistent with short and long term Information Technology and City strategy.
  • Ensures the resiliency and redundancy of the City data networks.
  • Coordinates with network liaisons and user departments to develop resource needs and upgrade plans.
  • Establishes LAN, WAN & WLAN policies, standards, and procedures and ensure adherence to City system security procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: Bachelor's Degree

Minimum Experience and Qualifications: At least 3 years of experience in wide area network administration. Relevant experience may be substituted for bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications include:
  • Ability to identify and structure problems, prioritize issues and solution development, troubleshoot technical problems, plan and conduct work, process information, and place information into relevant context or framework.
  • Demonstrated experience managing enterprise level networks
  • Experience working Cisco and Palo Alto network devices.
  • City, County, or State government experience
  • Experience with network monitoring and management using an automated solution.
  • Documented experience developing network diagrams and drawings using Microsoft Visio.
  • Cisco and/or Palo Alto certifications related to networking technologies.
  • At least three (3) years of experience in LAN, WAN or WLAN administration.
  • Knowledge of Cisco wireless controller technology and deployment of public and private SSIDs.

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile, the responses to their supplemental questions and their resumes. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in an oral board interview

  • Virtual Oral Board Interviews will be held Wednesday, August 30, 2023 via Microsoft Teams

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on the Civil Service Employment List. An applicant's ranking on the Civil Service list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:

  • 10% of your rating for education and work experience
  • 10% of your rating for letter of interest and resume
  • 80% of your rating for virtual panel interview

This recruitment will establish a civil service list that will be utilized to fill vacancies occurring within the next 6 months.

Veterans, Native American, or Disability preference points will be added to the final score for those that are placed on the Civil Service Employment List.
