About The Right To The City Alliance (RTTC)

Right To The City Alliance (RTTC) emerged in 2007 with a strong and powerful vision to 1) halt the displacement of low-income people, Black, Indigenous, and people of color, LGBTQ communities, and youth of color, and 2) protect and expand affordable housing in tandem with a broader movement to build democratic and just healthy communities for the 21st century.

Since its inception, Right To The City has quickly grown to encompass over 90 community-based racial, economic, gender, and environmental justice organizations located in 26 states and 45 cities. Representing true grassroots power and leadership of the most impacted, RTTC’s member organizations weave together local on-the-ground organizing, policy, and advocacy campaigns to build a robust and unstoppable national movement for inclusive, healthy housing and community development.

Position Summary

The RTTC National Field Team Organizer (FTO) will oversee direct member engagement and regional hub development, guide and support member organizations and leaders and implement our transformative organizing model for the alliance and the growing movement for dignified, affordable and safe homes for all. RTTC is building a skilled and diverse team of national organizers. We are looking to fill multiple roles that will add to our current team, each FTO with a cut of national turf. We need experienced organizers to join our energetic, visionary and solutions-oriented national staff team to help build the powerful movement we need to win the right to the city and liberation for our people. The ideal candidate will be someone who is multifaceted, able to adapt to changing conditions, believes deeply in self-determination and community power, and who embodies a commitment to both personal and systemic transformation. This person should have solid skills and experience doing grassroots organizing and strong multilingual capacity.

This position reports to: Associate Director for Organizing

This position participates in the: Field and Homes For All Strategy Teams.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Member Engagement (40%)
  • Track and support hubs and members, through the development of recruitment, orientation and training systems for new members in the designated region
  • As part of a cross-program team, lead member committees to advance HFA and RTTC member organizations strategic activities and goals
  • Identify, assess, and address organizational and campaign needs of member organizations
  • Work as part of the Field team, to connect members to various supports, materials, tools, training, and Homes For All committees and leadership bodies, as part of RTTCs ladder of engagement program
  • Support shared learning across regional and local hubs
  • Lead Hub Development (30%)
  • Support the holistic development of transformative organizing approaches within existing hubs to form stable organization and infrastructure
  • Coordinate with RTTC capacity building program to offer resources and training for hub organizational evolution
  • Support hub leaders directly to assess and advance power building goals and strategies, providing seamless access to RTTC and Homes For All leadership bodies and committees, as well as staff teams.
  • National Member Organizing Committee (20%)
  • Read, analyze and track local/state housing policy, within HFA priority areas (tenant protections, land trusts, etc.)
  • Develop systems for tracking of relevant legislation / mapping, providing updates to Field Team and HFA campaign committees on emerging and live measures around tenant protections.
  • Use popular education, language justice, and cultural organizing to translate/explain policies to the grassroots forces and allies, to build collective strategy and strengthen organizing and policy campaigns lead by members.
  • Formulate recommendations and identify organizing interventions in collaboration with members from across the alliance.

RTTC intentionally builds collaborative and transformative culture through:

  • Evolution of the work: Areas of work may change over time based on organization and movement needs, and always in consultation with the organizer.
  • Transformative Praxis: Participate in RTTC’s transformative justice program to align our practice with our values and principles. Build staff unity and cohesion, and principled struggle amongst all team/staff members.
  • Organizational participation: (Approx. 10% of time) team planning, staff meetings and training, national convenings, collaborative projects across teams, and HR/administrative tasks common to all positions.

Location & Travel: Location is negotiable; ideally FTO are located in or near their assigned turf. RTTC has concentrations of staff in the following areas: Atlanta, Boston, Brooklyn and San Francisco. We have offices in Brooklyn and in the SF bay area.

RTTC’s current COVID Safety Travel Policy is robust and flexible. All staff will be provided with at least two months notice if travel is needed. Travel is generally required for all RTTC staff; frequency and duration of travel is negotiable. On average, this position will be expected to travel [ at most, 1-2 times per month for a total of 5-10 days per month, year round].

Required Experience & Qualifications


  • Ability to write and speak Spanish, prefer bilingual/bicultural experience with organizing
  • Able to work independently while maintaining close communication with remote teams
  • Excellent attention to detail, and can handle a lot going on at once, consistently applying lessons learned to improve practices for an abundance approach to movement building
  • 8 - 10 years of base building & organizing experience working on local or statewide campaigns
  • At least 4 years of experience on leading on all aspects of campaign development and implementation for local or statewide campaigns - overall strategy and vision, narrative/comms, fundraising, coalition building, political education, etc
  • At least 4 years of experience building and leading multi-sector, multi regional / geographic coalitions
  • Willingness to travel often within the US. During the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Open to flexible hours and able to manage your time independently. You know that changing the world doesn't always happen between 9 and 5
  • At least 4 years of leading local and statewide advocacy campaigns (developing plan and leading implementation of campaigns)

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2-4 years policy analysis background
  • Supervisory experience, team leadership, training and mentoring others
  • At least 4 years of experience building and leading multi-sector, multi regional / geographic coalitions
  • Candidates based on the West coast, Midwest or Southern regions of the country
  • Strong connections and relationships to either RTTC member organizations and/or local grassroots ecosystem(s) in the U.S.

General Requirements

  • Experience in multi-racial, multicultural settings
  • Drivers license and auto insurance
  • Access to reliable internet, phone and remote office arrangements. RTTC provides for costs of home offices.
  • Experience and familiarity with housing justice, gentrification, displacement and anti-eviction work and/or grassroots base-building organizations and transformative organizing
  • Knowledge of common computer applications: MS Office, Google docs, Adobe Acrobat, Dropbox, Mac environment, and Zoom video tele-conferencing systems
  • Support the mission, vision and goals of the Right To The City Alliance

Salary and Benefits

These are full time non-exempt positions. The salary range starts at $80,000 - 100,000, compensation commensurate with experience.
