POSITION SUMMARY:
Under general supervision of the MRI Manager, and following established policies and procedures, operates a magnetic resonance scanner to obtain images for use by physicians in diagnoses and treatment of pathologies. The technologist provides technical and ancillary support to the department mission through demonstrated clinical and academic competency in MRI. Clinical and academic competency is defined as completing training and meeting all clinical responsibilities to all areas assigned, ability to work unsupervised in the clinical setting, willingness to rotate to all areas as the need arises, and holding appropriate registration and advanced certification, as required by the ARRT, and the ACR. Primary duties are to work as a technologist on Menino Pavilion, Shapiro center or any future Boston Medical Center MRI locations, while also implementing policy and procedures as determined necessary.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

• Completes procedures in timely fashion while providing quality images for Radiology and outside departments. Completes work by the end of the shift or communicates with coworkers about work needing completion.
• Performs patient focused customer service and ensures the following standards are met appropriately and achieved. Communicates patient complaints professionally to the appropriate supervisor. Keeps discussions around patients to a minimum and ensures that patients are not subjected to departmental conversations and/or any inappropriate behavior. Handles telephone calls and requests for services both professionally and appropriately.
• Utilizes hospital's behavioral standards as the basis for decision making and to facilitate the department and hospital's mission.
• Participate in intravenous (IV) training, and passes all competencies required to start and administer IV contrast material under the general observation of a qualified physician, as per department policy and procedure.
• Treats patients and fellow staff with dignity and respect and reports any/all problems to the supervisor.
• Operates a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner to perform technologist duties as required and necessary for proper departmental work flow. Prepares patient for exams as required and insures patient comfort and modesty at all times. Accommodates patient needs and staffing needs through flexibility in scheduling and timeliness of studies.
• Ensures that all required documentation is properly completed for billing purposes to include (but not necessarily limited to) electronic orders and paperwork related to all procedures performed. Understands and adheres to managed care guidelines.
• Works hours as regularly scheduled or according to the operational needs of the radiology department.
• Performs appropriate studies as determined through policy and procedure. Follows requisition in terms of providing proper study for patients. Ensures that exams requested match patient condition and/or history and calls or asks proper persons for more information as necessary to perform the proper study.
• Sets up equipment as necessary and uses proper imaging techniques. Adjusts imaging factors when necessary to improve study or quality factors. Works through radiologist's requirements to provide appropriate images and provides additional views and variations of techniques as requested.
• Maintains equipment through interaction with both management and department service vendors to maximize equipment up time, patient care, and minimize dollar impact to the hospital.
• Monitors patient's conditions and if it is determined assistance may be required, the employee takes action to facilitate the best course of care to include: nurse involvement, further monitoring and/or other patient focused solutions.
• Follows all departmental established and appropriate policies and procedures as required.
• Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.

EDUCATION:
Must be a graduate of an approved school that fulfills the ARRT requirements for primary or secondary pathway education in MRI.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED

• Must be ARRT registered in Radiologic Technology.

• MRI Specialty required or obtained within one year of employment.

• BLS required

EXPERIENCE:
Experience in MRI preferred. MRI specific classroom experience a plus.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

• Knowledge of cross sectional anatomy and medical terminology with the analytical skills to effectively utilize knowledge towards imaging processes, techniques and procedures.

• Working knowledge of Radiology Information Systems (RIS) and Hospital Information Systems (HIS).

• Ability to rely on experience, judgment and time management skills to plan and accomplish goals.

• Must present a positive, team oriented attitude and a professional appearance.

• Ability to adhere to safety standards set forth by the Radiology Department, BMC and other regulatory agencies.

• Ability to work cooperatively with members of the healthcare delivery team and staff, ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule; to set priorities and solve problems; to respond quickly to emergency requests.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients and all/any apprehensions, to instruct students and to interact with other staff technologists.
