Job Description

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (must be included on application/resume)

  • Basic understanding of general concepts of GIS.
  • B.S. in Horticultural Science, Natural Resources, Forestry, Geographic Information Systems plus (2) two years of experience or a combination of equivalent education and experience to equal at least (6) years.
  • Experience using AutoCAD, ESRI software suite including ArcGIS Pro/ArcGIS Online and Microsoft Access.
  • Experience with GPS data collection and data manipulation.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of plants and plant identification.
  • Experience with curatorial work at an arboretum or botanical garden.
  • Knowledge of traditional field survey techniques and use of field survey equipment.

JOB TITLE: Plant Recorder

DEPARTMENT: Horticulture

SUPERVISOR: Curatorial Manager

APPOINTMENT: 100% Time – 12 Month. May include early, late or weekend hours


PURPOSE: To support and implement mapping duties, plant records data management and other curatorial activities for the plant collections and gardens at the Arboretum.


POSITION DESCRIPTION: This position is responsible for cataloging and mapping the Arboretum plant collections, gardens and grounds; managing collections mapping data; assisting the Curatorial Manager with managing the plant records database; data collection and mapping of new garden and collections projects; assisting Arboretum staff with the production and management of printed maps, web maps and collections related data; assist with periodic review of plant records curatorial practices.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

40% Field mapping and data collection

  • Map structures, memorials, minor utilities and natural features on the Arboretum property,
  • Map new and existing plantings to capture additions, changes, label status, etc. per scheduled mapping rotation
  • Train staff, interns and researchers on how to use field mapping equipment for data collection

40% Maintenance of hard copy and digital maps and plant records database

  • Digitize and manage drawing files of hard copy maps, plans and construction drawings
  • Assist with data entry of plant accession, location, nomenclatural and label requests
  • Obtain and incorporate into map records “as-built” electronic plans from utility companies, architects, landscape architects and engineers
  • Update collection and garden map data and keep current to reflect new and changing plantings for use both internally and via public web map applications
  • Develop and maintain maps showing memorials, utilities, land forms, boundaries and other features

10% Production of maps and other collection related data

  • Produce presentation/print-ready maps, web maps and map data for Arboretum staff
  • Manage and update wayfinding web map application in coordination with multiple departments
  • Export and update data for online plant search

10% Assist with labeling, herbarium and other curatorial duties as assigned


The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum is a community outreach unit of the University of Minnesota’s College of Food, Agriculture and Natural Resource Sciences. The Arboretum is located west of Minneapolis/St Paul and its 1,200 acres traverse the municipalities of Chaska, Chanhassen and Victoria.
