Summary


The Nurse Apprentice:


  • Performs various competency based patient care activities and related duties necessary to care for the personal needs and comfort of the patient as well as for the effective and efficient operation of the department.
  • Works under a competency based progressive hourly wage schedule as follows:
  • Utilizes knowledge gained from participation in an associated nursing program to assist the Registered Nurse in the care of the patient.


Period Wage/hr Competencies


1 (Starting wage) $14.00 Proficient in all basic OJL competencies and pass all nursing


program semester 4 classes with a grade of C or higher to move to


period 2 wage.


2 $17.00 Proficient in all advanced OJL competencies and pass NSG 4421


Professional Nursing Preceptor with grade of C or higher to move to


period 3 wage


3 $20.00 Pass NCLEX to move to Completion Wage


4 $22.00 Minimum ending wage


  • Is subject to a 500-hour probationary period.
  • Witnessing consents.
  • Will be assigned a 1-to-1, apprentice to journey-worker (mentor).
  • The apprentice shall receive work experience and job related education in all phases of the occupation, including safe work practices, necessary to develop the skill and proficiency of a skilled professional.
  • Administration of IV chemotherapy.
  • Any skills for which the student nurse apprentice has not been cleared by the nursing education program.
  • May NOT perform the following skills:
  • Providing second signature/check for controlled drugs, blood products, and medications listed as requiring independent double-checking.
  • Transporting a patient alone when an RN is required.
  • Taking verbal or phone orders without the presence of the licensed nurse preceptor.
  • Will be rotated through various experiences as is mandated per academic curriculum as well as to ensure a well-rounded professional upon completion of the apprenticeship
  • Administration and discontinuation of blood or blood products.



Essential Functions


  • 1.2. Apply personal protective equipment
  • 1.7. Assist patients with activities of daily living such as feeding, clothing, care of teeth and hair, toileting
  • 1.8. Perform skin care and pressure ulcer prevention, turning
  • 1.4. Position and transfer patients
  • 1.5. Perform restorative care to include active and passive range-of-motion exercises and contracture care
  • 1.3. Assist patients with ambulation, including but not exclusive to use of mobile assistive devices such as walkers, canes, crutches, gait belts, and wheelchairs
  • 1.10. Communicate with patients and families using therapeutic communication methods- as well as others per academic verified skill check off and skill progression with mentor.
  • 1.1. Perform hand hygiene
  • 1.9. Apply sequential compression stockings and/or devices
  • 1.6. Perform hygiene care including bed baths, urinary catheter care, and ostomy care

Qualifications


Minimum Experience Required


  • Granted admission into the second semester of the associated Nursing program.
  • Has met the minimum qualifications for application to the Nurse Apprenticeship Program as follows:
  • Completed employer interview process and human resources procedural requirements.
  • Physical Applicants will be physically capable of performing the essential eligibility criteria of the apprenticeship program, with or without a reasonable accommodation, and without posing a direct threat to the health and safety of the individual or others.
  • Has met the minimum standards as set forth by the employer as follows:
  • Age Applicants must not be less than 18 years of age and provide appropriate verification of age respecting Alabama state laws.
  • Completed approved application.


Minimum Experience Preferred


  • Current Patient Care Student Intern II


Minimum Education Required


  • Education Applicants must meet qualifications to progress into the second semester of the associated Nursing Program at the time of application
  • Current enrollment in the approved curriculum of an RN program.


Required Skills/Abilities


  • Must be able to read, write and speak English
  • Ability to communicate effectively in an emergency situation.
  • Annual completion of established competency requirements
  • Ability to function under stressful situations
  • Must be able to read and write clearly and legibly.
  • Experience in operating personal computers (preferred)
  • Successful course completion in Basic Cardiac Life Support
