Job Description

We are looking for MEDICAL RECORDS TECHNICIANS at Joint Base San Antonio Lackland, TX. (Full Time, Monday-Friday)


Summary


This position Serves as a medical records technician to process and maintain inpatient, outpatient or ambulatory procedure unit medical records. Required to compile, extract or locate medical information/data to ensure medical record accountability and availability in accordance with DoD and medical service standards.


Main responsibilities and duties include but are not limited to:


  • Assist with annual medical records retirement process; assist with pulling medical records from the index list created by suspense date.
  • Files military forms documenting patient care into patient medical records.
  • Perform routine office duties to include handling medical documentation received via incoming/outgoing mail and faxes, answering phone calls, and assisting customers with questions and concerns.
  • Initiates and maintains medical records in accordance with prescribed directives.
  • Prepares reports regarding record statistics as necessary. Participates in records review as part of the facility's quality assurance program and in accordance with accreditation standards.
  • Prepare medical records documentation in accordance with procedures manuals and regulations.
  • Retires medical records in accordance with regulatory guidelines, for quality and utilization review.
  • Review charged-out records monthly to retrieve those records charged out for more than 3 days.
  • Searches for missing paperwork or records. Requests information pertaining to patient treatment to place in the medical record.
  • Conducts daily pull, delivery and retrieval of patient records.
  • Reviews records to ensure proper and complete documentation; verify patient information, provider signatures, provider numbers/stamps and dates of treatment are on each of the appropriate forms filed within the medical records. Report any discrepancies to section Government representative.
  • Assist with Air Force active-duty records Inventory annually.
  • Assemble medical records for transfer to records department or to other military facilities daily Using PRT (Paper Record Tracking) Application.
  • Assist with packing/processing documents received/sent via base distribution. All medical documents received from an external source must be added to the appropriate EHR via GENESIS/HAIMS within 72 hours of receipt.
  • Scan all documents including Clear Legible Reports (CLRs) into MHS Electronic Health Record (EHR) via Health Artifact and Image Management Solution (HAIMS) and/or MHS GENESIS.


Qualifications, Skills And Requirements
  • Knowledge of various microcomputer equipment with the ability to input, retrieve and format data.
  • Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) standards for complete, prompt, and accurate health records.
  • Tuberculosis Skin Test: 2 step test within the last 12 months
  • A fully qualified typist (computer keyboard) with a minimum of 40 WPM is required.
  • Must possess the ability to research operational activities requiring coordination with multiple functional organizational within the Air Force as well as other civilian and federal agencies.
  • Immunizations: The successful applicant shall be immunized with seasonal influenza vaccine and the following:
  • Varicella: current
  • General medical ethics, telephone etiquette, and excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Must have a High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED) equivalency. Must have and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate as accepted by American Heart Association (AHA) (Heart Savers, Admin) (Providers course) or American Red Cross. This certification must be acquired through hands-on training. Certification acquired through an online training course is not acceptable.
  • Work Environment: Requirements include prolonged walking, standing, sitting, or bending.

  • Hep B: current
  • Physical Requirements: Must be able to carry 25-50 pounds and reach high shelving units with the assistance of stepladders to retrieve and file medical records.
  • Hep A: current
  • Tdap: current
  • Standard office equipment, such as computers, typewriters, copiers, fax machines, telephone systems and office automation systems, to perform a substantial range of medical record maintenance support.
  • HIV: periodic
  • Experience: Must have at least one (1) year experience in a position with comparable duties and qualifications; or specialized Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT); or Registered Health Information Administrator certification required.
  • Influenza: annual
  • English language, correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and format to prepare and edit written correspondence, reports, and transcribed material.
