Medical Assistant (MA)
PART - TIME
Salary: $18.00 - $29.66
JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for assisting physicians and mid-level practitioners with patient care, clerical, environmental and organizational tasks. Responsible for appointment scheduling and chart management. Provides information to patients so they may fully utilize and benefit from the clinic services. Conveys a positive image of clinic. May be assigned to specific medical specialty (e.g., pediatrics) to help with patient care related to that specialty.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Patient care responsibilities as assigned which may include:
- Assisting physicians/nurses with various procedures.
- Relaying instructions to patients/families; answering calls and providing pertinent information.
- Checking schedules and organizing patient flow. Accompanying patients to exam/procedure room.
- Performing screenings per provider guidelines.
- Assisting patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc.
- Collecting patient history; charting.
Clerical responsibilities as assigned which may include:
- Scheduling appointments
- Managing charts to ensure information completed and filed appropriately.
- Sending/receiving patient medical records; obtaining lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.
- Completing forms/requisitions as needed.
- Verifying insurance coverage and patient demographics
Environmental responsibilities as assigned which may include:
- Cleaning sterilizer according to scheduled maintenance program and keeping appropriate records
- Ordering, sorting, storing supplies.
- Restocking exam/procedure rooms.
- Setting up instruments and equipment according to department protocol.
- Cleaning exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control.
Organizational responsibilities as assigned which may include:
- Sharing problems relating to patients and/or staff with immediate supervisors quickly.
- Respecting/promoting patient rights
- Responding appropriately to emergency codes
PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean.
- Always maintains patient confidentiality.
- Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time.
- Communicates the mission, ethics, and goals of the facility, as well as the focus statement of the department.
- Completes annual education requirements.
- Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
- Represents the organization in a pleasant, positive, and professional manner.
- Maintains regulatory requirements.
- Wears identification while on duty, uses computerized punch time system correctly.
- Completes in-services and returns in a timely fashion.
- Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
EDUCATION:
- Some college preferred. Courses in medical specialties, e.g., Pediatric Assisting.
- High School Diploma or equivalent (transcript is acceptable)
EXPERIENCE:
- Experience or interest in healthcare.
- Minimum of one year work experience in public contact job, preferably service related.
REGULARTORY REQUIREMENTS:
- CPR BLS certification ? current and not expired
- Medical Assistant (MA) certification.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
- Other languages preferred.
- Bilingual ? English/Spanish preferred.
- Able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of health care field and medical specialty.
- Ability to learn and retain information regarding patient care procedures.
- Knowledge of specific assisting tasks related to medical specialty.
- Understands of patient education needs by effectively sharing information with patients and families.
- Ability to demonstrate compassion and caring in dealing with others.
- Knowledge of medical staff procedures, minute taking and medical staff office processes.
- Ability to learn new software programs as they are implemented to better facilitate processes.
- Basic computer knowledge, word processing and database management.
- Able to plan, prioritize and complete delegated tasks.
ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Combination of medical office and exam/procedure room settings.
- Well-lighted, well-ventilated, adequate space.
- Exposure to communicable diseases and other conditions common to clinic setting.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:
- Sensory Discrimination: Necessary

- Sitting: Approximately 1-2 hours per shift for a duration of 1-2 hours at a time.
- Fine Motor Coordination: Necessary
- Walking: Approximately 1-2 hours per shift for up to 10-75 feet at a time on carpet/tile surface.
- Standing in Place: Approximately one hour per shift for a duration of 5-10 minutes at a time on carpet/ tile surface.
- Lifting: Average weight 5-25 pounds for up to four feet approximately 1-10 times per hour. Occasionally up to 250 pounds as needed for patient transfer (with assistance or other staff to prevent potential injury to employee).
- Must be able to use appropriate body mechanics techniques when making necessary patient transfers and helping patients with walking, dressing, etc.
- Reaching: Overhead to a height of approximately 10 feet as needed per hour.
- Bending: Waist to floor 15-25 times per shift.
- Carrying: Average weight 1-25 pounds for up to 75 feet approximately 1-15 times per hour.
- Pushing/Pulling: Average weight 50-250 pounds for 10-75 feet on carpet/tile surface as necessary for pushing wheelchair bound patients.
- Vision: Necessary
- Environmental Conditions: Exposed to hazards/possible blood borne pathogens; Cleaning chemicals
