Job Description
We are looking for a Professional Mechanical Engineer II to deliver core mechanical engineering expertise to our Architectural/Engineering (AEs) and internal stakeholders enabling Microsoft to design and build best-in-class cloud infrastructure worldwide that power the world’s largest online services.
Reporting to the Americas (AMER) Mechanical Discipline Manager, you will oversee, manage, review, coordinate and provide key technical input during detailed design and construction administration activities which are completed by our Architect/Engineer (AE) Consultant partners for the Network refresh retrofits. In addition to Network Refresh renovations, this position will include supporting Mechanical/Plumbing/Fire Protection/BAS system reviews of lease site designs to ensure these Lease partner team designs meet our Microsoft requirements.
This position will collaborate and manage internal and external resources for the design, coordination and delivery of discipline-specific systems aligning with Microsoft and site-specific requirements.
Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud. Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects. We are looking for an individual to help build the cloud datacenters that power the world’s largest online services.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Operations teams with Mechanical and BAS system and equipment strategic improvements, working closely with equipment vendors and suppliers.
  • Manage all Mechanical and BAS system designs during the design stages, equipment procurement, bidding, manufacturing, delivery and installation on site. Identify and resolve issues raised by the construction teams and various stakeholders.
  • Responsible for oversight of specification and drawing development, detailing the sequence of operation for the Mechanical systems and overall drawings and specifications for our Mechanical topology.
  • Responsible for leading Mechanical and BAS workgroups with representatives from consulting firms along with key stakeholders within Microsoft
  • Travel to sites for “Factory Witness Testing”, equipment and engineering vendor interaction in the design process, as well as final commissioning of the installed systems.
  • Technical review and analysis of the lease and colocation datacenter space from external providers for compliance with Microsoft requirements.
  • Interface closely with internal procurement team, manufacturers and the global and local engineering teams to deliver the Mechanical and BAS solutions needed for each project.
  • Lead and direct A/E consultants in the design and coordination of the Mech/BAS systems with other disciplines, associated controls and overall cooling methodology for our datacenter builds.
  • Collaborate with Microsoft’s Global Mechanical Engineering and Building Automation team to understand and develop the datacenter (DC) mechanical and BAS designs from Basis of Design (BOD) to Issue for Constructions (IFC) for new DC project buildouts and datacenter retrofits.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications
  • OR Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 2+ years related technical engineering experience
  • OR equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years related technical engineering experience
    • OR Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 2+ years related technical engineering experience
    • OR Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 1+ years related technical engineering experience
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of experience dealing with complex mechanical engineering and building automation systems for critical environment.
  • OR Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 1+ years related technical engineering experience
  • 3+ years of experience in consulting engineering with minimum of 2 years of experience as lead engineer.
  • Professional Engineer Licenses required.
Other Requirements
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to, the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

  • Ability to lead a team of engineers in advanced engineering and operational processes and procedures as they relate to large datacenter environments.
  • OR Doctorate degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 1+ years related technical engineering experience
  • OR equivalent experience.
  • Ability to perform complex business case analysis to justify technical decisions.
  • OR Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related technical engineering experience
  • Experience working in high critical environment projects.
  • Ability to prepare and present using MS Office software packages.
  • Attention to detail and maintain high quality standards.
  • Able to travel domestically and internationally.
  • Excellent knowledge of building codes and regulations.

Mechanical Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $94,300 - $182,600 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $120,900 - $198,600 per year.
