Job Description
The Mechanic supports the daily operations of the Tech Transportation Garage under the direct supervision of the Lead Mechanic and Department Management by performing a variety of activities designed to service, repair and maintain the various USH Tram vehicles/fleet and watercraft. Performs maintenance and repair activities on various pieces of light/heavy equipment including but not limited to heavy-duty truck and semi-tractors, high pressure pumps, trailers, street sweepers, aerial towers and man lifts. Assists in performance of state safety inspections as required law to ensure USH is in compliance with state and federal regulations and other duties assigned within the Technical Services Department at Universal Studios Hollywood (“USH”).

Responsibilities:

  • Wears personal protective equipment and complies with safety regulations.
  • Include routine servicing, in addition to major functional repair/maintenance.
  • Road test vehicles to ensure quality repair.
  • Is responsible to identify and report all such equipment that is broken, damaged, or unsafe.
  • Wear eye, ear and back protection when appropriate.
  • Advise body shop Foreman of additional damage or supplemental needs or if repairs will not be completed on time.
  • Completes all required reports and records in a timely and accurate fashion.
  • Establishes and maintains effective professional working relationship with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Supervise work of any apprentice technicians.
  • Teardown and inspect for additional or hidden repairs.
  • Understand and follow Federal, State and Local regulations, such as those governing the storage and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Working knowledge and experience in the use of all equipment, tooling, and machinery in an appropriate and safe manner.
  • Perform work as outlined on repair work orders with efficiency and accuracy in accordance with department standards.
  • Keep shop area neat and clean.
  • Maintains work area in clean and safe working condition, emptying trash containers, putting up cleaning materials and equipment, cleaning up spills and cleaning areas.
  • Steering and Suspension System : Aligns and balances wheels, repairs or replaces tie rods, ball joints, gear boxes, shock absorbers, springs, steering linkage, kingpins, power steering, hoses, pumps, walking beam suspensions and air suspensions.
  • Hydraulic: Repairs or replaces pumps, hoses, valves, winches and cylinders.
  • Coupling Devices: Adjusts, repairs, inspects and replaces fifth wheel hitches and pintle hitches. Overhauls engines, replaces engines, and rebuilds components. Maintains service logs and records of maintenance on vehicles and motorized equipment, using fleet maintenance and management software. Prepares work orders and cost materials estimates. Keeps tools, equipment, and work area clean, organized, and in good working condition. May assist in training lower-level workers in mechanical repair techniques. Road tests vehicles.
  • Heating and Air Conditioning: Repairs or replaces heater cores, condensers, compressors, hoses, and controls; recharges air conditioning systems.
  • Brakes: Repairs or replaces shoes, pads, drums, hoses, calipers, cylinders, any heavy-duty air brakes.
  • Cooling: Flushes radiator, replaces hoses and thermostat, repairs or replaces radiator and water pump, fan drives, DCA treatment filters, air intercoolers and oil coolers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Electrical: Repairs or replaces fuses, batteries, lights, instruments, warning devices, controls and switches, computer controls, modules, alternators, starters, and defective cables and wiring. This will include 12 and 24-volt systems found on military equipment.
  • Air: Repairs or replaces compressors, air dryers, brake valves, air tanks and hoses.
  • Drive: Repairs and replaces drive shaft, differential, axle, manual, automatic and sophisticated computer-controlled transmissions, clutches, transfer cases, power take-off systems, transmission reversers, all wheel drive steering axles and final drives.
  • Exhaust and Emissions Control: Replaces mufflers, manifolds, catalytic converters, turbochargers, blowers, and pipes.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Ability to communicate with other mechanics about repair work needed.
  • Skill in the use of gas and electric welding equipment.
  • Skill in the use of mechanized tools, jacks, and hoists.
  • Knowledge of body and frame construction.
  • Skill in the use of a variety of hand tools.
  • Knowledge of safety issues in the use of tools, equipment, and supplies used in repair of motorized vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to enter repair information in fleet maintenance management software.
  • Ability to provide training and explain instructions and guidelines to others effectively.
  • Knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of motor vehicles and engines.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical, electrical and hydraulic malfunctions.
  • Ability to read manuals and schematics. Ability to rebuild engines and major driveline components.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate the work of the unit. Ability to determine work priorities and assign work to employees.
  • Skill in the use of a variety of diagnostic testing and tuning equipment.
  • Ability & willingness to work a variety of schedules, overtime, weekends and holidays with short notice
  • Ability and willingness to respond to incidents in locations requiring climbing, fall-protection, and other non-traditional work-environments.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal communication skills both verbal and written on a technical level
  • Must have the ability to motivate employees and work independently and as part of a team.
