Job Description
Role: Managing Editor for Environmental Activism
Team: Editorial Scope: Individual contributor to Creative Studio
Years of Experience: 5+
Location: Ventura, California
COVID-19 Vaccinations: Patagonia requires all employees to demonstrate proof of receiving a COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of their employment.
The Managing Editor for Environmental Activism is an editor, yes, but foremost a skilled writer responsible for conceiving and co-creating campaigns, advertising, explanatory essays and social media assets related to the core of Patagonia’s purpose: using business to drive positive environmental outcomes.
Candidates ought to have at least five years of copy-writing experience; have led collaborative teams through creative processes or issue-driven political campaigns; and appreciate how time spent in nature motivates people to protect it. A familiarity with environmental and social issues including conservation, the climate crisis, grassroots organizing and where they intersect is advantageous. Above all, candidates need to be quick studies of fast-changing circumstances and be capable of toggling between long-term projects and rapid responses. By helping Patagonia communicate well on its love of environmentalism and social justice, you’ll help us popularize ways we’re finding to save our home planet and recruit more people to do the same.
What You’ll Do
  • Develop marketing campaigns for a range of initiatives and issues.
  • Adaptable: You can work with different personal styles.
  • Dedicated: There are easier ways to make a living. You’ve stuck with writing and editing because you care deeply about the written word, and you take pride in helping others succeed.
  • Write a few great advertisements.
  • Inclusive: Committed to justice, equity, and antiracism in every aspect of your work, and to challenging conventional wisdom through evidence, reason, and amplifying dissenting, unconventional, and marginalized voices.
  • Collaborative: As Yvon Chouinard writes in Let My People Go Surfing, “the Patagonia culture rewards the ensemble player while it barely tolerates those who need the limelight.”
  • Find and develop stories about real people doing remarkable things.
  • Recognize and elevate the creative ideas of others.
  • Unflappable: Multiple rounds of approval, late changes when you thought it was all done—all in a day’s work.
  • Ensure that all the words we share are clear, accurate, smart and remain consistent with Patagonia’s values. Who You Are:
  • Enable seamless solutions for executing marketing briefs in various consumer-facing promotional vehicles. Actually, no. Our editors see to it that a sentence like that never makes it out alive.
  • Serve as a key editorial collaborator with Patagonia Action Works and the Environmental Activism team.
  • Become a reliable authority on Patagonia’s social and environmental initiatives.
  • Conscientious and organized: You meet deadlines and help others meet them, too. You manage details and keep projects on track using spreadsheets, checklists, check-in meetings or whatever works.
  • Generate a wide range of promotional materials—from emails to event flyers; postcards to banner ads; hang tags to paid search results; blog posts to op-eds—that all aim to be something a friend would choose to read.
  • Work with social media managers to directly engage with Patagonia’s communities online.
  • Free thinker: You’re not a willful contrarian, but you arrive at your own conclusions.
  • Cultivate and build reciprocal, trust-based relationships with a network of contributors of diverse ages, genders, races, sexual orientations and abilities.
Experience You Bring
  • Drive for accuracy and attention to detail a must.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and deadlines.
  • Capable of streamlining, troubleshooting and improving processes.
  • Conscientious and able to provide complete follow-through on areas of responsibility.
  • 5–10 years writing, editing, re-writing and proofreading experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and a knowledge of Patagonia’s voice.
  • 3 years generating marketing campaigns, preferably for an NGO or other organization working in the environmental or social justice fields.
  • Ability to be flexible within the job to ensure the best processes/systems for smooth completion of all projects.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to set and meet quick deadlines.
