Perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled trades, maintenance construction and equipment tasks in connection with the maintenance and construction of City streets, facilities, properties and other sites under City obligation. Operate a wide variety of light vehicles, specialized machinery, hand and power tools and medium and complex equipment.
The following duties are illustrative only - not intended to be all inclusive:
Incumbent is expected to be proficient in the following tasks, for the following:
Operate equipment used in the division such as backhoe, tractor, street sweeper, dump truck, asphalt rollers, compressors, snow plows and sanders, specialized machinery and front loader. Plow snow; sand streets; sweep streets and gutters, sidewalks, ditches; clean gulches; pick up trash and debris; cut branches; mow and weed wacks City right-of-ways; cut downslopes and shores up ditch banks. Dig out old damaged asphalt; patch chuckholes and street cuts with asphalt hot-mix; perform street overlay and crack-seal operations; make concrete repairs on curbs, gutters and drainage structures. Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on division equipment; clean equipment and Public Works shop and yard areas as necessary.
Fabricate, install, and remove traffic signs; set up barricades, construction signs and cones; assist in guardrail installation; flags traffic. Assist in the layout of street markings; install traffic striping material, including tape and paint for striping crosswalks; operate paint striper for painting parking lots.
Assemble traffic signal hardware; assist with installation and maintenance of traffic signals; assists in traffic signal repair if needed. Assist in set up, maintenance, and removal of decorations and devices for special events. May train and instruct lower level maintenance worker on occasion. Responsible for traffic control, detours and job site safety. Respond to emergency calls on weekends and nights, as required. Perform related work as required and assigned.
Work is performed in accordance with established procedures and well-defined standard practices requiring some authority to select which methods are applicable in any given situation. Virtually all work is reviewed regularly while in progress and upon completion for accuracy and quality. Matters not specifically covered in operating instructions are reviewed with the supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge - Working knowledge of safety practices and procedures; of the methods, materials and equipment used in construction, maintenance, and repair activities within the assigned division.
Skills - Operation of equipment and tools used in assigned maintenance operations and the operation of vehicles as required by the position.
Abilities - Perform manual labor, including heavy lifting for extended periods of time under all weather conditions; follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff in a crew environment to accomplish tasks of the division.
EVIDENCE OF QUALIFICATIONS:
Training - High School diploma or equivalent.
Experience – Minimum of six (6) months experience in construction maintenance and repair

Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Level I - Possess a current and valid Colorado Commercial Class "A" or Class "B" driver's license (CDL) or ability to obtain within 180 days from date of hire.
Level II - Must possess Class A or B driver's license (CDL) at time of placement.
