JOB SUMMARY
The primary function of this position is to perform moderately heavy janitorial duties in maintaining county buildings and facilities. This position also performs semi-skilled work in assisting in repairing and maintaining property and grounds using a variety of machines, tools, equipment and inmate labor.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Drives County vehicles transporting tools, equipment, and inmate workers to worksite.
  • Cleans floors, sweep, mop, wax, etc.
  • Assists in moving files, desks, furniture, etc.
  • Vacuums all carpets.
  • Cleans furniture.
  • Dusts desks, shelves, window blinds, etc.
  • Sanitizes rest rooms and empties trash.
  • Cleans windows and window seals.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.
  • Maintains required qualifications for signing out inmate workers.
  • Maintains the appearance of the grounds.
  • Observes all rules related to use of inmate labor including paperwork, supervision, transport, sign-in/sign-out, safety supervision, and adherence of all workers and co-workers to the rules for inmate workers established by the Sheriff.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED. No prior related work experience.
Special Qualifications:
Must be able to communicate in and comprehend the English language. Requires valid Florida Driver’s License.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to follow specific procedures that may result in interaction with co-workers, citizens, or other individuals.
  • Ability to perform copying, maintaining files, or entering data OR utilizing light mechanical equipment such as a vehicle, lawn mower, or hand tool OR clean and maintain a facility.
  • Ability to make decisions regarding own activities and priorities.
  • Ability to perform specific clerical or manual tasks.
  • Ability to work with less than ten co-workers who are mostly engaged in the same activities as me.
  • Ability to perform routine or clearly defined activities under close supervision.
  • Ability to work primarily alone.
  • Ability to have guidelines for work but determine the approach for doing the work.
  • Ability to have procedures to follow for work but have a supervisor check work often.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is light and requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:
  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
  • Handling: Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand.
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
  • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
  • Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Mental Acuity: Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
  • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
  • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
  • Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.
  • Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  • Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Manual Dexterity: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
  • Visual Acuity: Have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading.
  • Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
  • Speaking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely.
  • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
