Job Description

The Licensed Practical Nurse in the Operating Room (LPN OR) functions primarily in surgeries and invasive procedures for all age groups of patients for the perioperative and procedural areas; functions in other areas based on competency level within and outside the perioperative and procedural areas. The LPN OR assists with and is responsible for the gathering the appropriate supplies for cases using knowledge of and best practices of sterile technique; actively participates and ensures responsibilities for turnaround to occur in an acceptable and timely manner; Able to scrub cases following Inova’s Policies with knowledge of surgical instrumentation, medication safety, prevention of unintended retained surgical items, sharp safety. Knowledgeable in the sterilization process of surgical instrumentation.

Job Responsibilities


  • Facilitates efficient turnover time by prioritizing activities related to equipment and instrumentation needed for cases to follow in assigned room. Recognizes and reports problems related to kits, packs equipment, or supplies.
  • Performs tasks at the sterile field as directed in an operating room including passing supplies, equipment, or instruments, sponging, or suctioning an operative site, preparing, and cutting suture material, transferring, and irrigating with fluids, management of medications, handling specimens, and assist in counting supplies and instruments with the circulating nurse (RN).
  • Functions under the direction of the RN or independent Practitioner in providing patient care, emotional support and problem-solving, all -in accordance with hospital, nursing and unit policies, procedures, guidelines and protocols.
  • Anticipates and responds to the needs of a surgeon and other team members by monitoring the sterile field and providing the required instruments and supplies during the intraoperative phase of patient care.
  • Recognizes, intervenes, and reports situations which impede patient safety. Safeguards the privacy of patients. Maintains confidentiality relating to patients. Aware of patient’s rights and legal, moral, and ethical implications of actions.
  • Collaborates with the circulating nurse prior to a surgical procedure to carry out the plan of care by preparing the operating room, gathering, and preparing supplies, instruments, and equipment, preparing, and maintaining the sterile field using sterile and antiseptic technique and ensuring that surgical equipment is functioning properly and safely.



Additional Requirements

What You Need:

  • Skills: Proficient in English, verbal and written communication skills and computer skills required.
  • Licensure: Eligible for licensing in the commonwealth of Virginia as a LPN
  • Education: Graduate of an accredited LPN school.
  • Certifications: BLS Certification (from the American Heart Association)
