Job Description

The World Language Teacher reports directly to the Head of Lower School. This position shall have direct oversight of the student body, inclusive of behavior management, academic protocols and guidance. Ability to connect with students, families, and to work as part of a dedicated team of individuals.


The World Language Teacher at Léman should:

  • Create an environment that fosters a global mindset and uses culturally responsive pedagogy.
  • Teach using innovative and learner-centered comprehension-based communicative language teaching.
  • Attend functions in support of school and community.
  • Maintain student portfolios and facilitate student led conference following division requirements.
  • Encourage students to ask questions and to express their difficulties.
  • Know and use a wide range of assessment strategies consistent with course content and objectives.
  • Assist students in taking responsibility for their own actions.
  • Provide a safe learning environment in which students can take intellectual risks.
  • Create an atmosphere of mutual respect between all students and with the teacher.
  • Encourage students to set realistic goals and to use their time in a constructive and balanced manner.
  • Provide reports on student progress and maintain open communication with ensuring that these reports are accurate and constructive.
  • Provide opportunities for practice of listening speaking reading and writing as appropriate to the target proficiency levels of the students.
  • Identify students who need additional academic assistance and be able to refer such students appropriately.
  • Create a stimulating, welcoming and challenging learning environment.
  • Encourage students to participate in the extracurricular life of the school.
  • Differentiate instruction and assessment to meet the diverse needs of students.
  • Exercise good classroom management with the use of fair and consistent standards and appropriate sanctions that are clearly articulated to the students.


Skill Set Requirements:

  • Ability to teach in a blended adaptive learning environment/classroom.
  • Ability to monitor student progress and report information in a timely manner.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write the World Language language assigned fluently.
  • Introduce and strengthen language with supporting materials to develop a high level of proficiency in the World Language.
  • Deep knowledge of philosophy, theory, and recent research in second-language acquisition.
  • Ability to prioritize and to expend allotted resources in alignment with stated academic priorities.
  • Highly developed written and verbal communication skills.
  • Some knowledge of IB Philosophy and Approaches to Teaching and Learning.
  • Strong ability to problem solve independently and implement appropriate solutions.
  • Highly developed presentation skills.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Outcome Curriculum Mapping.
  • Ability to function as a student achievement advocate and advisor.
  • Facilitate understanding of the World Language and the cultures of target language.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with other colleagues and ability to co-plan flexibly with department members.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of curriculum and instruction within the appropriate content area and/or grade level.
  • Effective organizational skills including but not limited to creative lesson planning, implementing units of study, differentiating instruction, designing and implementing assessments.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of ACTFL’s World Readiness Standards and Proficiency Levels.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Project Based Learning and Standards Based Grading.
  • Encourage students to develop oral and literacy language skills appropriate to age and abilities by consistent modeling.
  • Ability to mentor and coach students.
  • Willingness to seek out support when necessary
