Job Description

The City of Puyallup is hiring for a Systems and Technology Services Librarian. The job posting is open continuous and the priority application date is May 1st.

The successful application will perform a variety of professional library services in conjunction with selection, maintenance and circulation of library materials to meet the educational, recreational, and informational needs of the community. Incumbents work as part of a team to provide in-depth reference services to library customers in person, by telephone, or email, and promote library services to the community through education and outreach to schools and community organizations.
The City of Puyallup is a community of 43,000 and is situated at the foot of scenic Mount Rainier. Essential Functions

  • Participates in professional organizations and activities to keep informed of current and emerging trends in public libraries.
  • Provides a variety of programs for all ages.
  • Develops web page content and links.
  • Establishes community liaisons with appropriate agencies and organizations in order to promote library services and facilitate programming and service delivery.
  • Plans, organizes, implements, coordinates, monitors, and assesses new and existing services and programs of the library, based on community needs.
  • Maintains print and electronic collections, files, and indexes as assigned, including weeding, selection, and ongoing maintenance.
  • Assists patrons in the use of library collections through reference interviews, database and web searches, reader's advisory, and provides instruction in the use of computer software to locate requested materials.
  • Evaluates, weeds, and develops collection.
  • Submits monthly reports and aids, as needed, in the preparation of the annual budget and report.
  • In addition to the above, the duties listed below are also considered essential for positions in the following assignments:
  • Uses library management tools to analyze, research, plan and implement systems and routines to increase efficiency and lower programmatic costs.
  • Participates in the development of displays and marketing of the library's collection, services and programs, in order to increase use.
  • Maintains current knowledge of materials, resources, and services of the library and refers patrons as required.
  • Evaluates collections, allocates and controls materials budget as assigned.

Systems and Technology Services Librarian
  • Serves as administrator for the library website and summer reading program software.
  • Acts as the liaison to city IT department.
  • Assists patrons with in depth computer related questions.
  • Monitors future technology trends and makes recommendations about.
  • Performs basic IT maintenance for staff and public computers.
  • Performs reference and circulation desk time.
  • Manages RFID machines and systems.
  • Attends to database authentication maintenance.
  • Creates and presents programing related to technology (coding, basic computer, etc.).
  • Responsible for the operation and maintains the function of the ILS and associated software, services, equipment, processes, and vendors.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Search strategies used for retrieving information from electronic databases.
  • Dewey decimal system of classification and Library of Congress subject headings.
  • A wide variety of reference sources, popular culture, authors, literature, publishers and publications.
  • Knowledge and support of the principles of intellectual freedom.

Ability to:
  • Use independent judgment and make good decisions when resolving problems relating to employees and customers/public.
  • Establish and maintain good customer relations.
  • Clearly, succinctly, and effectively communicate ideas and thoughts both verbally and in writing.
  • Operate with a minimum of supervision and work collaboratively in a team environment to find solutions to problems.
  • Learn the operation and use of an automated circulation system and bibliographic data base searching techniques using computer data base.
  • Use diplomacy and tact to establish and maintain relationships with customers, subordinates and peers.
  • Diagnose problems and develop solutions.
  • Recognize and set priorities, and to plan, coordinate and organize own work.
  • Work effectively, with a teamwork orientation, in daily activities as well as addressing problems and unique situations.
  • Set priorities and to use initiative and independent judgment in a wide variety of situations is required.
  • Listen to, understand, and interpret the concerns of library users.
  • Read, write, speak and understand the English language.
  • Monitor and assess needs of patrons.
  • Work a varied schedule, including evenings and weekends.

Education and Experience:
  • Master of Library Science Degree from an American Library Association accredited school of librarianship and Washington State certification as a librarian.
  • Training, experience, or study in the area(s) of library IT, young adult, children's, and/or reference librarianship.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Possession of or the ability to obtain, and maintain throughout employment, a valid Washington State driver's license.

Physical Characteristics and Work Environment

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: Constant use of sight, hearing, and speech abilities to perform essential functions and communicate with others. Constant fine finger manipulation and use of hands and arms in reaching/handling/fingering/grasping while operating office equipment and computers, preparing written documentation, handling library materials, paperwork, etc. Frequent sitting may be extended at times, while doing desk activities. Frequent bending/twisting at waist/knees/neck while reaching for library materials, working at desk, worktable, or moving from sitting to standing position. Frequent standing in combination with walking (short distances) throughout work shift in library areas; standing may be extended at times. Occasional lifting/carrying up to 30-pound file boxes, library materials, documents, etc. Occasional pushing/pulling force up to 10 pounds opening doors, drawers, and moving materials. Occasional climbing on step stools, ladders and stairs. Works primarily indoors in a library environment with low noise levels.
SELECTION PROCESS
Those applicants whose qualifications most closely correspond to the City's current needs will be contacted for interviews and/or testing. The appointing authority may conduct second interviews.
