Job Description
Primary Work Address: Dept. of Genetics, Boston, MA, 02115

The lab of Dr. Josefina del Mármol at Harvard Medical School aims to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the molecular logic of olfaction, from the structure features that determine odor specificity to the evolutionary forces that shape olfactory-driven behavior. For this, the lab uses cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), electrophysiology, calcium imaging, computational modeling, and behavioral experiments of olfactory preferences to elucidate the molecular mechanisms that allow animals to detect and discriminate the vast olfactory space. For more information about the lab and their work, please visit

About the Lab Manager role:
You will hold an integral role within the team – directing the day-to-day operations involved in running the lab and serving as both a collaborative partner to Dr. del Mármol and the primary liaison between the lab and various external partners (Harvard Medical School, HHMI, etc.). The successful candidate for this position is a highly organized, self-motivated professional who has impeccable follow-through, outstanding communication skills, and a strong proactive approach. This is an opportunity to have a tremendous impact working with a small, passionate lab team that is part of a community of creative scholars, talented scientists, and dedicated staff focused on advancing research.
This position is expected to begin on/around September 1st, 2023 in concurrence with Dr. del Mármol’s upcoming appointment as a
Freeman Hrabowski Scholar
.
What we provide:
  • Access to HHMI’s Udemy on-demand training courses and interactive skill-building seminars taught by members of our learning and organization development team.
  • Opportunities for professional development and growth.
  • A competitive compensation package with comprehensive health and welfare benefits.
  • Joining the Harvard Medical School research community including interactions with scientists at various levels on a day-to-day basis and attending seminars, talks, and presentations.
  • Partnering with an investigator that has a deep and demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and mentorship.
What you’ll do:
  • Ensuring grant spending stays on target, processing reimbursements, and designating lab duties as needed
  • Performing scientific tasks in support of team members’ research projects as needed
  • Maintaining lab equipment, shipping materials and handling material transfer agreements (MTAs)
  • Training personnel in specialized laboratory techniques and safety procedures
  • Ordering and receiving lab supplies and managing inventory
  • Coordinating new lab member onboarding paperwork including key card access to facilities, lab safety training assignments, and HepB vaccination
  • Organizing COMS and IACUC protocols, import permits for new mosquito lines and shipping/receiving mosquito eggs
  • Coordinating EHS safety standards with the department and the university
  • Organizing lab meetings and lab events
  • Serving as point of contact for lab inspections and facilities (fire, emergency situations, power/water shutdowns, biosafety inspections, etc.)
What you bring:
  • A bachelor’s degree in a scientific field is required.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and high attention to detail.
  • Strong sense of self-motivation, integrity, trustworthiness, and ability to work in a diverse environment with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
  • Previous experience working in a research laboratory is required. Previous experience working in a lab management capacity would be a plus, but is not required.
