The Minnehaha County Juvenile Detention Center invites applications for a Juvenile Correctional Officer II to perform professional work in the supervision, care, guidance, and custody of juveniles detained by the courts.

GREAT WAGES! The hiring range is $26.65-$29.41 with a full earning potential up to $38.58 PLUS regular opportunities for pay increases.

NIGHT SHIFT DIFFERENTIAL! Now paying a $1.00/hr night shift differential!

This is a full-time position with a schedule of 8 hour weekday overnight shifts with rotating weekend and holiday shifts to provide coverage in a 24/7 facility. Weekend 12 hour shifts are only scheduled every third weekend.

A comprehensive benefits package includes paid holidays; health, dental, vision, and life insurance; generous PTO program; extended sick leave program; inclusion in the South Dakota Retirement System (SDRS); and a deferred compensation plan!

RETENTION BONUS: Newly hired Juvenile Correctional Officers are eligible to receive $1,000 at 9 months, 18 months, 27 months, and 36 months of service with good performance!!

How You Will Make an Impact

  • Supervise and observe juvenile's activities. Enforce facility and disciplinary rules.
  • Supervise and train staff. Complete performance evaluations.
  • Act as Special Lay Magistrate. Gather testimony from law enforcement. Determine placement of the juvenile. Schedule court date and time. Notify guardian of determination.
  • Administer medication, take blood pressure and temperature, and assess the medical status and history of juveniles. Assess medical emergency situations and communicate with medical personnel to ensure proper medical care of juveniles.
  • Admit and release juveniles by completing paperwork and ensuring accuracy of information and checking juveniles' property and medication in and out of the computer system.
  • Assist in the development of Center programs for youth.

What You Need to Succeed in this Role

  • Bachelor's degree in social science or related field and two years of experience at or comparable to Juvenile Correctional Officer I. Comparable combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Must possess certification in Medication Aide, CPR, CSM, and first aid (or have the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire).
  • Working knowledge of the growth, development, needs and problems of adolescents.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and must maintain a safe driving record with Minnehaha County.
