Job Description
University of Virginia Advancement Communications seeks a Junior Designer who is detail-oriented, self-starting and has a strong ability to think creatively and strategically.


Within the creative team, the Junior Designer will conceptualize, present ideas, and quickly implement visual solutions for feature stories, digital content (including web, email and social media), advertising executions, fundraising case statements, annual reports, gift proposals, event graphics and more.


The Junior Designer is expected to work collaboratively with the entire Advancement Communications team, with close guidance from the Assistant Art Director as well as the Senior Creative Director. The Junior Designer will creatively develop and implement digital content and strategies across platforms to convey the visual identity for the fundraising campaign brand.


The department is preparing for the conclusion of a five-year fundraising campaign for the University of Virginia while taking steps towards future campaigns. The advancement communications team is seeking a versatile designer to develop creative fundraising communications and produce a variety of content with a heavy digital focus. This position will help achieve UVA’s fundraising goals by conceptualizing, designing, and developing content that will inspire a range of audiences to support the University and demonstrate the benefits of giving to UVA.


This position will report to the Assistant Art Director and collaborate with all advancement communications team members as a creative partner. They will also proactively build relationships with teams and individuals across the University to develop assets and templates for marketing and philanthropic support in the current campaign for the University.


The Junior Designer will possess knowledge of HTML and CSS with experience managing web content as well as email development.


Designed & Execute Advancement Communications


  • Follow work processes to meet deadlines, produce high-quality content, and ensure accuracy.
  • Cultivate contacts across Grounds to build relationships with other creatives.
  • Design feature stories, web/email content, social media content, fundraising case statements, annual reports, video and multimedia graphics, and gift proposals
  • Collaborate with team members on projects and create a cohesive, consistent and effective branded marketing stream.
  • Adhere to brand identity and guidelines in executing communication materials across a variety of media, including digital, social, online, environmental, photography, print, and events.
  • Support department leadership and team members in meeting critical deliverables and objectives.
  • Work with partners in University Advancement to develop compelling fundraising materials that align with the campaign brand


Develop & Maintain Web Content


  • Collaborate with other content producers on the team to consistently update our online content and digital experiences for both general advancement communications as well as campaign focused initiatives.


Social Media Production


  • Develop graphics to promote campaign priorities and key messages via social media to support University Advancement.


Minimum Qualifications


  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including superior attention to detail
  • A reliable collaborator, comfortable in a team setting
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Strong working knowledge of design software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Keynote
  • A versatile designer, proficient in a variety of creative software applications, platforms, and digital marketing techniques
  • Ability to understand, support and help develop complex creative and communications strategies.
  • Experience working in a Mac environment is a must.
  • Ability to translate the University’s educational mission, strategic aims, and programs, into persuasive visual communications materials
  • Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)
  • Knowledge of basic process and project management
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • An excellent listener who can give, receive, and readily assimilate constructive feedback
  • At least one year of experience
  • Proficiency with content management systems, specifically Drupal
  • Knowledge of HTML, CSS, and other back-end programming tools.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience building HTML emails and familiarity with different email clients’ abilities and limitations preferred.
  • Experience work as part of a creative team
  • Familiarity with all major social media platforms Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, and YouTube.
  • A bachelor's or Fine Arts degree in design communications
  • Ability to be highly collaborative, while maintaining quality creative standards. Comfortable with relationship and networking building with university partners.


This position is Hybrid located in Charlottesville, VA.


This position will remain open until filled


This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance. Anticipated Hiring Range: $50,000 - $55,000 commensurate with education and experience.
