Job Description

Jr/Sr High School Art Teacher


The art teacher will be responsible for generating, conceptualizing, organizing and developing artistic lessons in order to instruct students to begin to develop their own creative visual expression. The art teacher will work to develop aesthetic understandings and demonstrate and practice the process and application of the language of art criticism. He or she will assist students in the discovery and development of talents in the field of art.


The successful candidate will be able to:

  • Teach a wide variety of art classes including Middle School Art, Studio Art, Ceramics & Sculpture, and Advanced Studio Art.
  • Apply criteria to evaluate artwork.
  • Use elements and principles of design to create and discuss effective artworks.
  • Relate artistic ideas and works with societal, cultural and historical context to deepen understanding.
  • Plan lessons and present studio experiences in drawing, painting, mixed media, printmaking, clay, papier mache, metals, other three dimensional media, casting, modeling and constructing.
  • Relate visual perception to the aesthetic experience.
  • Demonstrate knowledge, competency and teaching ability in the content of art, including aesthetics, art history, art criticism, and studio performance.


  • Knowledge of current art instructional teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiates instruction based upon students’ various learning styles.
  • Creates an environment where individuals, art content, and inquiry are held in high regard and where students can actively learn and create. Implements and models appropriate safety practices when using art tools and operating equipment.
  • Teach knowledge and skills in art, including drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, and be able to integrate art history and the language of art criticism into studio experiences.
  • Perceive, analyze, and interpret meaning in artistic work and guide students to individual interpretation of meaning through the critique process.
  • Knows the fundamentals and different approaches to drawing media technique.
  • Communicate with parents, teachers, and school counselors on student progress.
  • Evaluate each student’s performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understandings, and assess students accordingly.
  • Plan and present art displays and exhibitions designed to exhibit student’s work for the school and community.
  • Demonstrate techniques in artistic methods necessary for student success in studio projects.
  • Provide instruction by which students develop aesthetic concepts and appreciations and the ability to make a qualitative judgment about art.
  • Provide individual feedback and small-group demonstrations to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students with varying intellectual and artistic abilities, and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities.
  • Knows and can apply elements of design and modern principles of art.
  • Understand the versatility of acrylic paints: dry brushing, staining, layering, underpainting, and mono-printing.
  • Instruct students in proper care and use of tools and equipment.
  • Maintain and manage inventory of supplies and equipment by organizing storage areas and control use of materials, equipment, and tools to prevent loss or abuse, and minimizing the time required for distribution and collection.
  • Attend district in-service trainings and find self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of collaborative and promotional strategies for working with colleagues, families and community groups to achieve common goals for enriching the art program, enhancing students’ learning and improving schools
  • Participate as the adviser for active High School Art Club.
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned by Administration.
